Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator (Open)
This role reports to the Associate Director of Risk Management and will support the University's mission and vision through the development and implementation of environmental health, occupational health, and safety and compliance programs to fulfill regulatory requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct research, analysis, interpretation, and communication on local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to compliance with environmental health, occupational health, and safety management programs; develop, implement, maintain, and/or update programs, policies, procedures, mandates, and initiatives that preserve compliance with codes, standards or regulations, in coordination with the appropriate designated university department; monitor emerging legislation and regulations with potential impact on university personnel, workplaces, and environmental, safety or compliance programs and related activities.
- Be responsible for oversight of, or performing testing, sampling or surveys of equipment, materials or environments and will collect and maintain required documentation and records of activities; compile and assess information (e.g., data, results, findings, methodologies) and prepare various reports or briefings; evaluate and develop data management procedures, resources, and tools in accordance with the appropriate knowledge and/or certifications.
- Develop, organize, direct, and participate in meetings, conferences, seminars, training/compliance programs, and committees; provide consultation to unit staff or university as necessary on compliance programs, policies, standards or regulations, as well as communicate and disseminate information on programs, policies, standards or regulations; develop, prepare, and/or approve training materials or communications related to compliance efforts and programs, including online.
- Design and coordinate workplace occupational health and safety programs and implement active efforts to identify, isolate, or eliminate hazardous operations, materials, or processes; coordinate and/or participate in responses to spills of hazardous materials; and coordinate hazardous materials waste management.
- Implement, maintain, and update emergency management response plans and procedures related to environmental health, occupational health, and safety, participate in mandated drills and investigations and fulfill emergency management roles in the event of a crisis.
- Assist in the investigation, response and/or reporting of complaints, injuries, and incidents; directly collaborate with and provide information to outside local, state, and federal regulatory agencies including, but not limited to; OSHA, MOSH, NFPA, ADA, ANSI, ASME, as well as risk management and insurance providers as authorized by university-level compliance authority. This includes travel to sites and conducting root cause analyses and audits, identifying risks and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Work collaboratively with facilities management and across departments to ensure compliance including generator testing, emergency preparedness training, ergonomics, safety testing/drills and working with local authorities, general safety measures, PPE training, industrial/chemical hygiene, waste management, wetlands, inspect, test, and evaluate workplace environment, programs, and equipment to ensure that they meet/follow government regulations.
- Alert relevant university department on unsafe work or practices, recommend stoppage as needed, and review documentation of corrective actions before operations resume.
- Conduct budget oversight, project management, contractor management, safety committee leadership, and annual compliance reporting.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of environmental health, occupational health, and safety regulations, equipment, and strategies to promote effective local, state or national security operations for protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
- Experience with project management and tracking tools.
- Knowledge of uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
- Experience coordinating and/or facilitating trainings for the campus community.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Ability to collaborate with influence, and instruct across departments and with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to enter, track, analyze databases and develop rational and realistic conclusions based on relevant information to resolve issues brought to his/her attention.
- Ability to develop and implement new environmental health and safety programs.
- Ability to supervise personnel and/or projects.
Minimum Training and
Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, biological sciences, chemistry, or a closely related field.
