Job Description:

Under general supervision, functions as a supervisor of a shiftand/or complex specialized unit.

Responsibilities:

Inspects police officers and security guards.
Performs supervisory duties, such as assigning specific patrolresponsibilities, establishing priorities and evaluating work performance; instructs, directs and guides the personnel on apatrol shift.
Conducts investigations and prepares detailedcomputer-generated and verbal reports on a variety of incidentsincluding, but not limited to, criminal offenses, traffic accidents, and personal injuries and missing persons.
Carefully observes the activities and capabilities of personnel under their supervision to ascertain whether or not police dutiesare promptly and efficiently performed. They shall report inwriting to their superior officer cases of misconduct,incompetence, neglect of duty or violations of the rules,regulations. Patrols campus to deter and detect criminal activity,identify hazards.
At the end of the tour-of-duty, the shift supervisor shallconfer with the incoming supervisor.
Enforces all University rules, regulations and State laws.
A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall evaluate subordinates and encourage personnel to achieve maximum levels of efficiency.
A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall relay orders to subordinate sand passes information up the chain-of-command to his/hersuperiors.
A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor are accountable for the accuracy,legibility and thoroughness of all reports submitted by theirsubordinates.
The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor are assigned specialized programassignments and ate responsible for program development and the training of police, staff and students about various campus safety programs.
The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall conduct required daily rollcalls and inspection of their shift.
The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor shall perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED, A.A. desirable.
Except for qualifications established by law, additionalrelated experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance ofthe work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Two or more years law enforcement experience
Highly Desirable:
Training Certifications in Defensive Tactics,Firearms, Investigations by the Maryland Police Training Commission in Defensive Tactics.
Thorough knowledge of citizens rights and responsibilities; offederal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
Skill in detecting situations imperiling public safety; in operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; in the care anduse of firearms, self-defense tools and criminal detection devices;in communicating effectively both orally and in writing; in operating two way radios and telephones in a variety of environments; in conducting confidential investigations; in applying knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions for both routine and critical situations.
Ability to show sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population; to maintain composure and demonstrate professionalism and restraint at all times; to perform extensive sitting, driving,standing, walking, climbing, and running; to lift, drag, and carry heavy objects; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to follow oral and written directions; to provide guidance and training or supervision to others; to respond tosituations requiring physical stamina and force;

to enter and exitvehicles frequently and quickly; to work in and wear personal protective equipment.

Employees in this job class are required to maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission.

Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’slicense.
