JOB DESCRIPTION

This job opening is being used to fill current and future vacant positions in this classification at various shifts, locations, and assigned days off.

ORDER OF PREFERENCE:
The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made based on fitness and ability, with preference given to:
Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide, and external candidates, respectively.

The Maintenance Trainee, Rail Car participates in the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) consisting of developmental training for a period of two (2) years in Rail Car Maintenance (CMNT). The trainee must satisfactorily progress thru each of four (4) training Levels consisting of both classroom and on the job training/experience as contemplated in the TSP. Upon graduation the trainee will be placed into a job assignment as a Mechanic, grade C within the CMNT, performing the associated responsibilities under the close supervision of both management staff, as well as, TSP "Mentor" mechanics assigned to provide on the job training (OJT) in the CMNT disciplines throughout the training period.

Principal

Job Duties
  • Attends formal training classes related to basic, intermediate and advanced rapid transit rail car vehicle maintenance. Gains familiarity with and develops skills in the maintenance, inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of WMATA rail cars vehicles and equipment.

  • Under the direct oversight of assigned journey level mechanics, uses hand tools, power tools and test equipment to inspect, diagnose and repair WMATA rail car vehicle vehicles and equipment malfunctions in accordance with safety and maintenance procedures and practices.

  • Completes all documentation and reports associated with the operation and maintenance of WMATA rail car vehicles and any required training documentation.

  • Provides assistance to supervisors and mechanical staff in emergencies by securing or safeguarding WMATA equipment, fire/life/safety, snow emergencies, etc. according to established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

Other Duties
  • Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.

  • Ability to work various hours, days, shifts and locations.

  • Ability to observe and mimic job tasks as demonstrated and assigned

  • Hand tools such as Wrench's, Sockets, Pliers, Screwdrivers

  • Measuring devices such as gauges, torque wrenches, calipers, rulers

  • Test equipment such as Multi Meters, Temperature Probes, Portable Test Units (PTU'S)

Supervisory Responsibility

Not responsible for supervising others.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma with two (2) years of Vocational Training in Electrical, Mechanical or Electronics
