Unit Counselor for Summer Camp
Locations: Camp Ledgewood in Peninsula, OH and/or Camp Timberlane in Wakeman, OH
Summer Camp Dates (including staff training days): June 3 - August 11, 2026
The Unit Counselor plays a vital role in delivering a transformative camp experience that nurtures personal growth, fosters resilience, and cultivates a meaningful connection to each other and the natural world. In partnership with fellow counselors and under the guidance of the Unit Leader, this position creates a vibrant environment that embodies the Girl Scout values of courage, confidence, and character.
Through thoughtfully designed and engaging activities, the Unit Counselor challenges and uplifts every camper, ensuring an experience rich with camaraderie, friendship-building, and lasting memories. As a mentor and guide, the Unit Counselor supports campers in navigating daily activities, developing new skills, and forming friendships, while upholding the highest standards set by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO), and the American Camp Association (ACA).
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Assist in the leadership, guidance, safety, and well-being of a unit under the direction and supervision of the Unit Leader
- Live with a group of campers and help each camper adjust and grow with other campers and camp life
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served
- Interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately modeling behavior in a positive manner
- Assist in the guidance of individual campers in the participation of unit and all-camp activities
- Assist with program activities and other activities in the unit, working closely with Unit Leader and Program Director
- Assist with all-camp program activities and other camp-wide activities as assigned
- Assist in activity teaching as assigned
- Set standards/examples of courtesy, good taste, respect, and proper manners throughout camp and in the dining hall, helping with campers as needed
- Conducts initial and end-of-season inventory; store equipment for safety
- Report all incidents/accidents to the supervisor immediately
- Responsible for completing and returning all records to the supervisor.
- Adhere to and uphold the safety and program standards of GSUSA, GSNEO, and ACA standards at all times
- Responsible for the welfare, safety, and cleanliness of each individual and camper in unit. Follows and enforces all recommended health guidelines, including handwashing and cleaning/sanitizing as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the successful implementation of GSNEO’s goals and objectives.
- Interest, knowledge, and skills in a variety of camp program fields
- Youth-oriented program background a plus
- Demonstrated ability to successfully handle conflict resolution at all levels with a variety of people, including external customers
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to communicate the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and authority when necessary
- Well-disciplined, able to meet deadlines and be a self-starter
- Able to work under pressure of many priorities and deadlines
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred
- Ability to meet schedule requirements, including flexible work week, early hours, nights, and weekends
- Will require travel throughout the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio jurisdiction
