Evidence Property Custodian – Police Department ()

Police/Public Safety – Dispatch.
Purpose:
Control and preserve all property accepted by or stored in the Police Department's storage areas in accordance with all statutes, laws, ordinances and regulations for which the Police Department is accountable. Duties include overseeing proper disposition of all items received by the property room; entering information into and updating the computer database; submitting evidence for testing; taking photographs and transporting evidence;
compiling reports; and testifying in court.
- Transfer evidence and property from the intake room to the vault using prescribed security measures; receive and execute court orders and file records.
- Transfer drugs to the lab for processing; retrieve lab reports, make copies for concerned parties, and file.
- Arrange for owners to claim property as needed.
- Research evidence case numbers for attorneys, judges’ assistants, officers detectives, and the public; answer questions on evidence and sign it out to proper authorities; update the evidence file.
- Prepare articles and packages for mailing; arrange for certified mail and transport to the post office; attach receipt when returned and hold item in proper storage area; pick up evidence from the state police lab as required.
- Answer subpoenas for testimony in court bringing evidence applicable to the case.
- Clean and maintain areas of the intake room, custodian office, vault, and bulk storage.
- Compare found property items with stolen property reports, particularly bicycles; contact owners and/or transport articles to regular/bulk storage.
- Print and distribute officers’ property sheets quarterly for disposition; process returned sheets according to officers’ input as to destroy, return, or hold property; set up destruction date for weapons and drugs; prepare a monthly activity sheet and maintain year‑to‑date totals; file evidence property cards; update the evidence file with the investigator assigned to the case; maintain the division filing system.
- Assist with the annual budget for the Evidence Division; order supplies for evidence packaging for the Police Department.
- Instruct new officers during the Field Training Program on proper departmental procedures for submitting evidence.
- Attend shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to stay current with departmental operations, to promote improved job performance, and to remain knowledgeable of changing state/municipal codes and criminal/civil case law.
- Preserve property and evidence from cross contamination, theft, or loss.
- Document all movement of items in the evidence management system; chain of custody.
- Ensure all releases and dispositions of property and evidence are authorized and accurately documented.
- Inventory property and evidence following department policy requirements.
- Order and maintain availability of packing supplies.
- High School diploma or GED required; vocational/technical school diploma preferred.
- Two years of security, administrative, police, law enforcement experience or related.
- Must possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
Salary: GS; $47,194/yr. ($22.68/hr.); plus full benefit package.
Work Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
