Company Description

Planning and Development Services of Kenton County (PDS) serves as the primary planning and development agency for Kenton County and its 19 cities. PDS oversees services related to planning, zoning, community development, building codes, and code enforcement, helping ensure safe and sustainable growth. The agency also manages infrastructure engineering and geographic information systems (GIS) to support informed decision‑making and efficient public services.

PDS collaborates with local governments, residents, and businesses to guide development that aligns with community goals and regulatory standards.

Role Description

The Associate Building Official is a full-time, on-site role located in Kenton County, KY. This role assists in administering and enforcing building codes and related regulations for residential, commercial, and public structures. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing building plans, performing or coordinating inspections, documenting findings, and working with property owners, contractors, and design professionals to resolve code-related issues. The Associate Building Official supports the Building Official in interpreting codes, issuing permits, and maintaining accurate records of inspections, violations, and compliance actions.

The role also involves collaborating with other PDS staff on development projects, participating in training and professional development, and contributing to continuous improvement of building safety and inspection processes.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of building codes, construction practices, and inspection procedures, with the ability to interpret and apply local and state regulations.
  • Experience reviewing plans and specifications for code compliance, including structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing considerations.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills for working with property owners, contractors, design professionals, and public officials.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills for documenting inspections, maintaining records, and preparing reports.
  • Ability to use technology tools such as permitting software, GIS applications, and standard office productivity software.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., ICC Building Inspector or Plans Examiner) or willingness to obtain them within a defined timeframe.
  • Experience in municipal or county government, code enforcement, or related fields is beneficial.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, public administration, or a related field preferred.
