Job Description
Under direction, is responsible for serving as a subject matter specialist for the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex communications systems; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Responsibilities- Perform routine and emergency service, maintenance, installation, and repair work on complex communications equipment and components.
- Provide remote access and in-person technical support for 911 communications’ computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and related software for the City of Columbus and surrounding Franklin County municipalities.
- Serve as liaison to vendors supplying specialized equipment and maintenance services for complex communication networks.
- Perform computer terminal or communications network troubleshooting using appropriate testing equipment.
- Generate and maintain communication systems software including monitoring, statistics, and diagnostic networking programs or line protocol test routines; maintain and repair LAN and WAN systems.
- Plan and coordinate the installation, maintenance, and repair of communication systems hardware and conduct inspections to ensure equipment is installed properly.
- Configure new software to operate effectively within various communication systems and coordinate the installation of software and hardware system updates.
- Create and manage new user accounts and login credentials for communication systems specific to the Department of Public Safety.
- Assist with the construction of communication networks and network facilities and coordinate the installation, repair, and construction with appropriate City personnel and private vendors.
- Analyze, test, evaluate, and calibrate complex communications equipment to ensure the performance of preventative maintenance functions.
- Maintain records, repair schedules, and various reports as required by management, the FAA, FCC, or other regulatory agencies.
- Prepare monthly and ad hoc reports with data compiled from various communication systems.
- May lead the work of employees engaged in performing technical communication systems work.
- Three (3) years of experience installing, repairing, or maintaining complex communications systems.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Some positions may require specialized certifications in public safety information technology.
