Quality Control Manager – Aggregates & Asphalt

Location: NW Ohio

Position Overview

The Quality Control Manager is responsible for leading and managing the quality program across the company’s 10 Asphalt Plants, 10 Aggregate Plants and Paving Operations across Western Ohio. This role oversees a team of 10–15 Field/Lab Technicians and ensures all materials meet state, federal, and project specifications. The QC Manager plays a critical role in plant support, product performance, compliance, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a leadership position that requires strong technical experience with asphalt, aggregates, construction materials testing, and QC program management.

Key Responsibilities Quality Control Leadership & Oversight
  • Lead and develop a high-performing QC team of 10–15 technicians across multiple plants and paving crews.
  • Oversee testing and quality compliance for Asphalt Mixes, Aggregate Products and Paving Operations
    .
  • Ensure all products meet ODOT, ASTM, AASHTO, and project-specific requirements.
  • Monitor plant operations, mix performance, gradations, moisture, densities, and production quality.
  • Implement, enforce, and refine company-wide quality control processes and best practices.
Plant & Field Support
  • Provide continuous QC support to 10 asphalt plants and 10 aggregate plants, including troubleshooting mix or material issues.
  • Coordinate QC activities with plant managers, operations teams, and paving superintendents.
  • Analyze daily QC data and provide actionable recommendations to improve materials performance.
Testing, Reporting & Compliance
  • Oversee laboratory testing, calibration, and certification requirements.
  • Maintain accurate QC records, test results, and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure company adherence to state and federal regulations, including ODOT, MSHA, and environmental standards.
  • Lead mix design development, verification, and adjustments for asphalt plants.
Paving Operations Quality
  • Support paving crews by monitoring density, compaction, pavement smoothness, and overall field quality.
  • Provide QC oversight during production and laydown operations to ensure performance and specification compliance.
  • Assist in resolving field issues related to materials, compaction, or surface performance.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate QC technicians; manage staffing, scheduling, and certifications.
  • Serve as the company’s primary quality representative with customers, inspectors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and production leadership to drive continuous improvement across all facilities.
  • Participate in audits, internal reviews, and performance improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Materials, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred; equivalent industry experience accepted.
  • 5–10+ years of experience in aggregates, asphalt, materials testing, or QC/QA roles within construction materials.
  • Strong understanding of asphalt mix design, aggregate production, and paving operations.
  • Experience with ODOT specifications, AASHTO/ASTM testing standards, and certification programs.
  • Prior experience managing QC teams across multiple locations strongly preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership ability with a track record of building and managing effective teams.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly to plants and field job sites.
