Lab Manager – Krichels Lab

Position Summary:

The lab manager will assist in research examining how soil microbial processes control the exchange of carbon and nitrogen between soils, plants, and the atmosphere. Responsibilities include purchasing equipment and supplies, maintaining a safe and productive environment, developing standard operating procedures, training new researchers, and assisting with basic field and laboratory research such as collecting soil samples, operating a portable trace‑gas analyzer, and processing samples.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Wet‑lab experience.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Procurement experience.
Responsibilities
  • Lab work
    • Preparing reagents
    • Washing glassware
    • Processing soil samples
    • Maintaining a clean and organized lab space
    • Developing standard operating procedures
  • Purchasing supplies and equipment
    • Purchasing laboratory equipment under the supervision of the PI
    • Monitoring and purchasing needed supplies
  • Maintaining instruments
    • Monitoring trace gas analyzers
    • Using compressed gas cylinders
    • Conducting preventative instrument maintenance
  • Mentoring researchers in lab methods and safety
    • Teaching lab safety to new researchers
    • Teaching common lab methods to new researchers
  • Field work
    • Collecting soil samples
    • Operating field instruments

Physical Demands:
This position may require occasional field work, including hiking for 1 mile with a 30‑pound backpack.
