What We Need YOU To Do: Ohio EPA wants you to join our team as the newest environmental specialist in the Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM) at our Northwest District Office in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Our Work Turns Technical Skills Into Statewide Impacts. In this role, you’ll serve as a lead resource for district staff, providing guidance, training, and technical support on solid waste management, ensuring staff stays current on solid waste rules, policies, and procedures. You’ll review engineering designs and peer technical reports for completeness and accuracy, conduct sampling and inspections at solid waste and C&DD facilities, and assess compliance with state and federal rules.
Teamwork is also key: you’ll collaborate across divisions and agency offices by participating in technical work groups, supporting enforcement actions as a subject matter expert, assisting with public outreach and inquiries, coordinating project tracking, preparing progress reports, and planning work commitments such as field inspections, permits, and technical reports.
Responsibilities- Provide technical support, training and guidance to district staff.
- Review peer reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Evaluate proposed engineering designs for soundness and compliance with solid waste regulations.
- Assess operations and construction activities for compliance.
- Prepare reports, permits, and compliance-related correspondence.
- Engineering preferred.
- 7 years relevant programmatic experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Or completion of undergraduate core coursework in an environmentally related discipline plus at least 3 years relevant programmatic experience.
- Or 2 years relevant programmatic experience as an Environmental Supervisor, or an equivalent minimum class qualification.
- New employees in OEPA’s solid waste program (except those in the solid waste planning unit) must obtain a sanitarian‑in‑training certificate during their probationary period.
