Summary

The position supports and repairs the technology within the School of Media and Communication (SMC), including two radio stations, a video production broadcast classroom, an audio production classroom, three labs, over 50 servers, and four networks, including Cisco, HP, Wheatstone, and a fiber network for the cameras. The broadcast engineer inspects equipment and conducts documented performance checks to ensure proper operation and compliance with FAA/FCC regulations and collaborates with WBGU TV.

Functions
  • Maintain and troubleshoot complex integrated systems with minimum supervision
  • Serve as Engineer for television broadcast studio and two radio broadcast stations. In-depth knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, applicable electrical, mechanical, structural and engineering methods
  • Inspect equipment and conduct documented performance checks to ensure proper operation and conformity with FCC regulations including quarterly FCC reports. Maintain radio station licenses.
  • Maintain and repair all SMC technical broadcast type equipment located throughout the Kuhlin Center and the radio transmitter facilities. RF engineering knowledge required
  • Responsible for maintaining audio, video, and RF technologies and engineering with the ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematic diagrams
  • Design, construct, and/or supervise new engineering projects as required
  • Assist faculty and organizations with technology recommendations
  • Provide hands‑on technical operations support for student, faculty and staff production activities both on and off campus as needed
  • Technical Advisor for student media organizations (Falcon Media including BG24 News, WBGU-FM, Falcon Radio, Radio News Organization and the Radio Sports Organization)
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and operate test equipment/tools necessary to repair and maintain analog/digital broadcast equipment
  • Research, order, and maintain adequate parts inventory to perform daily task
  • Acquire knowledge and apply emerging technologies where applicable
  • Ability to be on‑call 24/7 in case of emergencies
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree – Bachelor’s Degree
  • Preferred – Master’s Degree in Communications, Broadcast or related field
  • Experience – 2 years of Broadcast Engineering experience
  • Experience – 2 years of maintaining and repairing technical equipment, including studios, cameras, and broadcasting equipment such as Ross Xpression, Grass Valley Systems, and Wheatstone
  • Experience – 1 year utilizing servers, backup systems, and remote communications such as Comrex and Teradek
Additional Information (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Experience as Chief Engineer for Television Studio and Radio stations
  • Prior experience working in a university setting
  • Ability to assist faculty and organizations in the development, preparation, and implementation of operating/capital budgets and control of operating expenditures
  • Extensive technical knowledge of reading and understanding technical manuals and schematic diagrams related to audio, video, and RF technologies and engineering
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnosing, and testing skills on equipment/tools necessary to repair studio/post‑production equipment
  • Demonstrated competence in the design and construction of new engineering projects, as required
