Center Director and Senior Scientist

The Ohio Attorney General's Center for the Future of Forensic Science is a collaboration between BGSU and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) that began with a $12 million investment by the State of Ohio to build a BCI Laboratory Building on the BGSU campus. This work will be supported by a $650,000 line item in the State budget specifically for this initiative.

The Center Director and Senior Scientist will be the administrative lead and primary external point of contact for the Center responsible for the development of innovative and applied forensic science research and creation of educational and professional development opportunities for university, regional and state-wide constituencies.

• Contribute to the strategic direction and research priorities of the Center
• Foster forensic science research and development (R&D) opportunities and awareness
• Participate in R&D activities consistent with BGSU and BCI core objectives
• Serve as a liaison with BGSU faculty and staff to promote awareness and stimulate involvement in the field of applied forensic science
• Communicate and stay involved with the forensic science professionals working in the AGO facility at BGSU, to understand their challenges and the demands of the profession
• Create and help to deliver an ongoing program of professional education for in-career forensic scientists and practitioners in the professional world at large
• Serve as a liaison to, and work in cooperation with local, state, Federal and other forensic science and criminal justice professionals in advancing collaborative activities with BGSU
• Manage and supervise Center staff
• Develop training recommendations and requirements for forensic science personnel
• Coordinate with the AGO at the BGSU campus
• Confirm that the required government, university or other approvals for all R&D projects are obtained, including from any applicable Institutional Review Boards

• Establish and lead innovative R&D collaborations between BGSU and BCI; collaborate on projects, grants, and other forms of scholarship. Build a community of forensic science scholars at BGSU
• Develop educational and training opportunities for forensic professionals and students in areas of forensics science
• Generate, disseminate and apply knowledge of forensic science developed through research; sponsor venues to help showcase and highlight research and activities of the Center
• Research Leadership & Funding
  • Lead and participate in the development of externally funded research proposals, including federal, state, and foundation grants in forensic science and related disciplines
  • Serve as principal investigator or co-investigator on interdisciplinary research initiatives that advance forensic science practice and policy
  • Establish and maintain collaborative research partnerships with government agencies, crime laboratories, academic institutions, and industry
• Scholarly Output & Visibility
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, technical reports, and professional publications
  • Present research outcomes at national and international scientific and forensic science conferences
  • Enhance the national reputation of BGSU and BCI through leadership in forensic science scholarship
• Student & Faculty Engagement
  • Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers involved in forensic science projects
  • Engage with BGSU faculty across disciplines to support collaborative research initiatives
  • Provide guest lectures, workshops, or short courses supporting forensic science education and professional development
• Professional & Service Activities
  • Serve on advisory boards, scientific committees, or professional organizations related to forensic science
  • Contribute expertise to policy discussions, standards development, or best practices in forensic science
• Other duties as assigned

The following Degree is required:

• A Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) required preferably in forensic science, a natural science, or other related discipline

The following Experience is Required:

• 5 years of research experience Forensic Science experience preferred

The following Minimum Qualifications are preferred:

• 7 years of research experience, preferably in forensic science
• Teaching/training experience in a post-secondary setting, including mentoring graduate level research thesis projects

Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

• Demonstrated history of research and scholarly achievement
• A record of acquiring external resources to support R&D, team building and mentoring of associates and students
• Demonstrated commitment to student educational outcomes
• Excellent planning and organizational skills, and close attention to detail
• Superior oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to communicate a variety of target audiences both external and internal
