This full‑time Field Technician/Scientist position supports water quality sampling and other tasks for the South Florida Water Management District’s Water Quality Bureau. The role involves observation, sample collection, equipment maintenance, and occasional laboratory work. The position is based in Okeechobee, FL and works four 10‑hour days, Monday‑Thursday.
What Will You Do- Collect manual and electronic surface water quality and/or ecological and biological samples.
- Operate, clean, calibrate, and maintain monitoring equipment, including multi‑parameter water quality sondes and automatic water samplers.
- Prepare samples for laboratory analysis.
- Clean and maintain sampling platforms and sites using vegetation control equipment and basic hand tools.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a natural science or related field and 0-2 years of professional experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in field sampling techniques for surface water, working with field and water‑quality equipment, and trailering and operating powerboats up to 23 feet is highly preferred.
- Ability to lift 55 lb and work daily in remote, hot, humid, and wet conditions, including habitats with alligators, snakes, and stinging insects.
- Comfortable working in a field‑intensive environment with occasional laboratory work.
- Must pass a background check and have a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Starting salary ranges from $42,000 to $44,000 per year based on qualifications and experience.
