The position is tenure-track at Montana State University with an academic year appointment of 55% research, 35% teaching, and 10% service. The faculty member will be housed in the Department of Animal & Range Sciences; however, cross-department collaborations are expected. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a Montana Agricultural Experiment Station Hatch research project.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop a nationally recognized and externally funded program in veterinary entomology and a Montana Agricultural Experiment Station Hatch research project.
Focus the program on ectoparasite and endoparasite management in cow/calf and ewe/lamb systems, and emerging vector-borne diseases affecting domestic livestock and wildlife.
Address insect- and tick-borne pathogens relevant to Montana's livestock industry, including:
Fly-borne stress and disease transmission
Tick ecology
Emerging arthropod-vectored threats impacting animal productivity, welfare, and range health

Contribute to MSU's recognized strengths in livestock and rangeland systems.
Develop solutions-based research relevant to:
Integrated parasite management (IPM) strategies for livestock and wildlife on rangelands.
Resistance management and ecological interactions of parasites and hosts in confined and rangeland systems

Teaching responsibilities will include:
Two undergraduate courses and potential graduate-level offerings.
Specific courses to be discussed during the interview and negotiations

Advise undergraduate and graduate students, mentor student research, and participate in graduate committees within:
Entomology MS
Animal & Range Sciences MS/PhD
Related programs

Develop collaborations with MSU Extension specialists and agents to:
Deliver parasite management recommendations
Produce applied educational materials
Engage with stakeholders, including:
Montana livestock producers
Veterinarians
Tribal lands
Wildlife managers
Montana Department of Livestock

Seek extramural funding through competitive grants, industry partnerships, and producer organizations.
Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and Extension outlets.
Actively participate in the MSU Entomology Group, a multi-departmental faculty community contributing to:
Graduate instruction
Research
Public outreach related to insects and arthropod vectors

Collaborate with MSU's Veterinary Diagnostics Lab, Montana Ag Experiment Station research centers, and other land-grant faculty working in:
Animal health
Disease ecology
Integrated pest management

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Doctorate degree in Entomology, Animal Science, DVM, or related fields.

Demonstrated excellence, or high potential, to conduct and publish research.
Demonstrated excellence, or high potential, in undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring.
Demonstrated excellence, or high potential, to secure extramural and competitive research funding.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Academic or professional training in livestock, veterinary, or medical entomology.
Demonstrated or high potential to interact with state and regional stakeholders to address the management challenges of arthropods and arthropod vectored diseases of livestock and wildlife.
Understanding of microbial ecosystems and the application to sustainable livestock systems.
Experience in undergraduate instruction.

The Successful Candidate Will

Conduct independent research.
Address agricultural production needs associated with arthropod management.
Develop a nationally recognized program.
