Position OverviewUniversity Studies seeks qualified individuals to teach introductory, student‑success oriented courses for first‑year and exploring students. Courses include Learning Strategies, Career Exploration, Adventure Learning, Service‑Learning, and Intro to Health Professions. Each class is 1–3 credits and may vary in duration (a few weeks, a semester, or an academic year).
Duties and Responsibilities- Teach one or more courses designed for first‑year and exploring students or those seeking to improve academic performance.
- Evaluate student work and provide timely feedback.
- Submit grades by the University’s deadlines.
- Follow a shared curriculum and meet learning outcomes for the course.
- Mentor and connect with students.
- Collaborate with fellow faculty and the Program Director to continuously improve the program and teaching effectiveness.
- Utilize required technology, including the Canvas learning management system and the University’s grade submission system.
- Demonstrated experience working with students and colleagues.
- Master’s degree, preferably in Education, Counseling, Higher Education, or a related field.
- College teaching experience.
- Experience with teaching software systems (e.g., Canvas, NavMSU).
- Demonstrated experience with college student development through advising, teaching, or other student‑success work, particularly with first‑year or exploratory courses.
- Exhibit effective interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff.
- Exhibit strong written and oral communication skills.
- Be organized and responsive to student needs.
- Develop rapport with college students.
- Mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds.
- Use engaging pedagogy that actively engages students.
- Work well independently and take initiative.
- Provide effective leadership within the class and assume responsibility for organization and teaching activities.
Positions of 0.5 FTE or more may be represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Positions less than 0.5 FTE are not represented by the Union and are not required to pay dues.
