Brief Position Overview
Gallatin College is seeking a non‑tenure-track instructor to serve as a Lead Instructor or co‑instructor for the Law Enforcement Academy. All curriculum has been developed and will be provided to instructors at the time of hire.
ResponsibilitiesCourse instructors will be responsible for identifying and securing co‑instructors and teaching the following areas:
- Driving and Patrol Functions
- Firearms
- Interview and Interrogation
- Defensive Tactics
- Law Enforcement Scenarios
- Tactical Medicine
- Crime Scene Investigation/Evidence Processing
- Criminal, Juvenile, and Tribal Law
- Ethics
- Investigations
- Other Law Enforcement Training Requirements
Additional duties include:
- Understanding industry standards, best practices, and college rules.
- Communicating effectively with learners of all levels.
- Recognizing safety hazards and instructing proper use of tools and equipment.
- Maintaining and inventorying classroom or lab equipment and consumables.
- Keeping learning environments organized and clean.
- Providing or locating emergency medical assistance when needed.
- At least 21 years old.
- Minimum of two years of experience in training, teaching, or a related field.
- General knowledge of law enforcement, public safety, and the criminal justice system.
- Understanding of adult learning theories and practices.
- Prior teaching experience.
- Bachelor’s degree or associate degree from an accredited college/university.
- Expertise in subjects of instruction.
- Documented experience with a professional law enforcement agency.
- Ability to pass a background investigation.
- Proficiency in Spanish.
- Work professionally with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- Possess effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Contribute positively to the academic success of students and to Gallatin College’s mission.
- Add intellectual enrichment to the department and appreciate broad constituencies.
- Use Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs.
- Work extended hours as needed to accomplish training objectives.
- Be self‑motivated to complete tasks with limited supervision.
Special Requirements / Additional Information
Any position exceeding .5 Full‑Time Equivalent may be eligible for benefits as described in the policies of the Montana Two‑Year College Faculty Association, Montana State University, and the Montana University System.
