Instructor of Architecture – Non-Tenure Track Faculty (Applicant Pool)

BriefPosition Overview
The School of Architecture seeks an instructor qualified to teach one or more of the following courses in Environmental Design/Architecture depending upon available funding:
Architectural Design Studios, Architectural Structures, Architectural Graphics, Graduate Level Elective Courses, Professional Practice, Building Construction, Sustainability, Research Methods, Theory, Environmental Control Systems.
- Teach on‑campus courses.
- Advise, evaluate, and assist students.
- Participate in faculty meetings.
- Collaborate with and evaluate peer leaders when assigned to a section.
- Participate in mid and final departmental studio reviews.
- Foundations: A design‑related degree or a demonstrated record of distinguished teaching related to design.
- Architectural Design Studios: A professional degree in Architecture or a demonstrated record of distinguished practice or teaching.
- Architectural Structures: A professional degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field, or a demonstrated record of distinguished practice in structural engineering.
- Architectural Graphics: A professional degree in Architecture or significant professional experience and a demonstrated record of accomplishment in architectural graphics (hand and/or digital).
- Graduate Electives: A degree in the area of expertise or significant professional experience.
- Professional Practice:
Licensed architect with experience in a wide range of building project types. - Sustainability:
Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or research in sustainability, Net Zero design, ecological design, or the Living Building Challenge. - Building Construction:
Licensed architect or engineer with a record of experience in a wide range of building projects and phases. - Research Methods / Theory: A professional degree in Architecture or a demonstrated record of distinguished practice in design and/or research/theory, or distinguished teaching.
- Environmental Control Systems: A professional degree in Architecture or a demonstrated record of accomplishment in environmental control systems.
- Experience working with and engaging students and colleagues within and outside the department.
- A post‑professional degree in Architecture (30 credit minimum).
- Professional engineering registration.
- Ability to teach in multiple areas of the curriculum.
- Record of successful teaching accomplishments.
- Ph.D. or terminal degree in area of specialization.
- Experience in digital fabrication, design/build profession, or teaching design/build courses.
- Advanced computer application skills in area of specialization.
- Substantial professional portfolio (Professional Practice).
- LEED Certification or membership in USGB Council (Sustainability).
- Record of experience in both design and construction phases (Building Construction).
- Commitment to student, faculty, and staff enrichment.
- Relate to freshmen and develop classroom rapport with students.
- Mentor and inspire a broad student body.
- Have effective interpersonal skills and collaborate successfully with faculty and staff.
- Possess excellent written, graphic, and oral communication skills.
- Use engaging pedagogy that involves students in the learning process.
- Take initiative and work well independently.
- Be able to provide leadership and assume responsibility for organizational and program activities.
Contract:
LOA (Academic Year/Fall or Spring). Position is full or part‑time with FTE varying up to 1.0.
Positions .5 FTE or more are represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Positions below .5 FTE are not represented. Union affiliation is determined by job duties and collective bargaining unit.
