Overview
Job Summary:
KLJ is seeking an experienced Paleontologist III to lead and support paleontological surveys, excavations, and analysis across a variety of infrastructure and environmental projects. This role blends hands-on fieldwork with technical analysis, regulatory compliance, and collaborative project integration. You ll work closely with engineers, environmental specialists, and project managers to ensure paleontological resources are identified, preserved, and thoughtfully incorporated into project planning and design.
Beyond the field, you ll prepare high-quality technical reports, mentor junior staff, contribute to public outreach and education efforts, and stay current on advancements in paleontology and preservation practices.
- Paleontological Surveys and Excavations:
Conduct comprehensive surveys and excavations at project sites to identify, document, and preserve paleontological resources. - Analyze collected specimens and data to determine the significance of findings and their impact on project plans.
- Prepare detailed reports and documentation on paleontological findings, including site assessments, excavation results, and recommendations for preservation.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and environmental specialists to integrate paleontological considerations into project designs and plans.
- Ensure all projects adhere to federal, state, and local regulations regarding the protection of paleontological resources.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior paleontologists and interns.
- Stay current with advancements in paleontology and related fields through continuous learning and professional development courses.
- Comply with KLJ quality standards.
- Utilize effective written and oral communication.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and adhere to professional conduct and KLJ s policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- A Master s or Doctorate degree in Paleontology, Geology, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in paleontological research, preferably within the context of civil engineering or environmental consulting.
- Proficiency in identifying and analyzing fossil specimens, conducting field surveys, and using relevant software and tools for data analysis and reporting.
- In-depth understanding of paleontological preservation laws and regulations, as well as best practices for integrating paleontological considerations into engineering projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and build relationships with stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and solve complex problems related to paleontological preservation and project implementation.
- Meticulous attention to detail in conducting surveys, analyzing data, and preparing reports.
- Travel will be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- A valid driver s license is required.

This position requires the individual to work 40+ hours per week with 20% of time spent in the office and 80% in the field.
