The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for a SCADA Technician to support automation, instrumentation, PLCs, HMI systems, industrial networking, and cybersecurity for water treatment, wastewater collection, and reclamation facilities. Responsibilities include troubleshooting control systems, maintaining industrial communications, supporting system reliability, and ensuring continuous plant operations.

Work Week: Typically, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, with occasional after-hours and emergency responses for system failures.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Performs technical support involving instrumentation, automation, and control systems for the City’s SCADA systems at the water treatment, wastewater collection, and water reclamation facilities.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
  • Installs, configures, calibrates, troubleshoots and repairs a large variety of industrial instrumentation and control equipment including pressure/flow/temperature transducers, chemical analyzers, valve actuators, motor starters, and variable frequency drives (VFD).
  • Modifies HMI control screens using system software.
  • Investigates, analyzes and resolves issues with SCADA software installation and operation.
  • Monitors system performance to ensure continuous operation of SCADA systems at plants and distribution centers to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Collects, analyzes, and validates operational data from SCADA systems.
  • Configures and maintains data acquisition, historical logging, and ensures data integrity.
  • Investigates ladder logic Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) programs or controls schematics to identify causes of control system problems.
  • Reads and interprets electrical and controls schematics and ladder logic programs.
  • Performs field inspections and preventative maintenance at remote sites such as pump stations, reservoirs, and treatment plants.
  • Configures and troubleshoots Local Area Network (LAN) communications between servers, client workstations and programmable logic controllers.
  • Researches and troubleshoots radio and hardwired Ethernet and serial communication networks.
  • Implements and maintains cybersecurity measures for SCADA systems in accordance with industry standards.
  • Responds to system alarms, outages, and communication failures, including emergency situations and system failures outside of normal business hours.
  • Installs software security patches and operating system updates and resolves associated software compatibility issues.
  • Provides technical input and identifies operability issues, equipment preferences, and process performance limitations that may arise throughout the maintenance of current facilities and in the design and construction of new facilities.
  • Assists in reviewing and making suggestions on engineering reports, facility improvements, equipment specifications, and design studies relative to instrumentation, automation, and control systems.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of system configurations, network diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
  • Manages user access controls, system backups, and disaster recovery processes.
  • Ensures all work is completed in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures, rules and regulations and enforces the use of appropriate safety equipment.
  • Works with and trains others to recognize the hazards of plant chemicals and high voltage electricity.
  • Utilizes a City vehicle to perform field work as required by the Division.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to employees.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Interprets drawings, diagrams, specifications and blueprints, and provides technical assistance to staff as required.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Assists with developing documentation to provide for transfer of knowledge of technical processes and application software to future integrators.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification or as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Control Systems, or a related field, and
  • At least two years of experience in the design, operation, or troubleshooting of industrial control systems, software engineering, network administration, or related technical fields, or
