Position Summary:
The Phlebotomist Inpatient obtains and prepares specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests primarily in the acute care/inpatient setting; may require on‑call shifts.
Minimum Qualifications:Required
- High School Diploma or GED
- American Heart Association BLS required within six (6) months of hire
- Demonstrates competencies in obtaining specimen collections in acute care, during codes and traumas
- Previous healthcare experience as a Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Tech, EMT
- ASCP or equivalent Phlebotomy Certification
- Associate Degree in Science Related Field
- Six (6) months phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; brings discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
- Verifies patient by reading patient identification. Follows proper specimen labeling techniques.
- Obtains blood specimens by performing venipuncture, heel sticks, or other collection techniques including peripheral line collections.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
- Responds to codes and traumas as assigned and performs EKGs and transmits results.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifies supervisor of unresolved orders.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, patience, and maintains a professional demeanor at all times.
- Exercises tact, discretion, sensitivity, and maintains confidentiality.

- This role requires regular and sustained attendance.
- The position may necessitate working beyond a standard 40‑hour workweek, including weekends and after‑hours shifts.
- On‑call work may be required to respond promptly to organizational, patient, or employee needs.

Twist/Bend/Stoop/Kneel (Repeatedly): Twisting, bending, and stooping require flexibility and a wide range of motion in the spine and joints.
Reach Above Shoulder Level (Repeatedly): Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects as necessary above the shoulder, requiring strength and a stable base.
Push/Pull (Repeatedly): Using the upper extremities to press or exert force against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
Fine‑Finger Movements (Continuously): Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than using the whole hand as in handling.
Vision (Continuously): Close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures and to read computer screens, printed materials, and handwritten materials.
Cognitive Skills (Continuously): Learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, and make timely decisions in the context of a workflow.
