Essential Job Functions- Direct all nursing activities relating to the procedures performed. Evaluate and complete assessment of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during and after surgery and maintain complete and accurate records.
- Recognize and interpret symptoms indicative of changes in the patient’s condition. Communicate pertinent information to co‑workers and work collaboratively with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care.
- Assist in patient education during all phases of the patient’s experience. Ensure informed signed consents are completed prior to administration of sedation.
- Prepare all records pertaining to the procedure.
- Maintain equipment and supplies, including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, operating and troubleshooting specialized equipment and patient monitoring equipment, anticipating and assisting with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and medications. Post‑procedure, assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies/time used.
- Direct and assist with the cleaning and restocking of operating rooms at the completion of assignments.
- Assist in crash cart maintenance and defibrillator checks.
- Administer drugs, IV procedures and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures in a safe and accurate manner. Initiate orders and follow anesthesia protocol.
- Maintain ACLS certification.
- Check assignment for the day, noting routine and special equipment/supplies needed for each procedure.
- Check OR suite/procedure room for cleanliness and order, removing damp dust prior to usage.
- Assemble equipment and supplies needed for each procedure; check equipment to ensure it is properly functioning.
- Arrange furniture and equipment in such a manner that all pieces are accessible for efficient work by the scrub tech, anesthesia and surgeon.
- Assist with the cleaning and preparation of the operating/procedure room between cases.
- Communicate appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesiologists concerning patient care.
- Safely carry out physician's orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
- Communicate and interact with patients and family in a positive and supportive manner.
- Initiate and participate in patient and family education.
- May be required to rotate/float to areas other than assigned service area and take call.
