Specific Job Information

These regional coordinator positions require overnight travel and weekend work. The incumbent must have both technical and interpersonal skills, excellent communication, and leadership abilities to interact effectively with staff, sportsmen, landowners, and other stakeholders regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) issues. Time management, resilience in inclement weather, rough terrain, and exposure to offensive sights and odors are also required. Very long workdays may be necessary.

Job Duties
  • Oversee all CWD sampling operations within each region.
  • Coordinate field logistics and surveillance to ensure a successful sampling season.
  • Serve as the CWD Program’s liaison to FWP staff and the public in the region.
  • Act as lead technician for up to six field technicians, including scheduling, training, and supervising during the hunting season.
  • Teach technicians proper CWD sample collection, packaging, and data recording.
  • Collect deer heads for training, obtain permissions for sampling sites, and coordinate with meat processors and taxidermists for sample collection.
  • Distribute CWD‑related educational materials and lead outreach with hunters and the public.
  • Serve as the primary sample collector for the region during the archery season.

Skills and Abilities

  • Previous experience working as a CWD Program field technician.
  • Knowledge of all CWD sampling methods, data entry, and shipping protocols.
  • Understanding of the agency’s CWD management plan and the ability to communicate it to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of biology, disease processes, animal ecology, anatomy, and population dynamics.
  • Basic map reading skills; familiarity with coordinate systems and GPS units.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills, and accurate data collection following protocols.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to operate a four‑wheel‑drive vehicle safely.
  • Experience in a crew‑lead or lead‑worker capacity.
  • Capacity to work independently in hazardous conditions.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience)

Two years of college work toward a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field, combined with related work experience. Supervisory experience is preferred. Acceptable combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis. Certification in capture and handling of wildlife may be required.
