Job Overview
The mechanic shop, as part of the Facilities Services department, services and maintains all heavy equipment, vehicles, equipment, and implements used by Facilities Services and various MSU departments.
Responsibilities- Major mechanical work including adjusting, repairing, and replacing engines, motors, drivetrain, suspension, steering, electrical/electronic systems, fuel systems, brake systems, heating and cooling systems, body control systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Minor maintenance duties and repairs such as adjusting, lubricating, changing fluids and filters, replacing engine and body accessories, and repairing and replacing tires.
- Requisition parts through Campus Stores and outside vendors.
- Estimate time and cost of services.
- Accurately complete service records.
- Assist service technician(s) and mechanic(s) as required.
- Perform all major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, campus standby generators, large and small equipment, and tools.
- Weld ferrous and non‑ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment.
- Participate in University Services Fleet and Equipment condition assessments.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of safe standard practices, procedures, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the mechanic/machinist trade.
- Experience inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, maintaining, and repairing a variety of automotive (gasoline and diesel), agricultural, and specialized equipment.
- Ability to estimate required work time and materials and maintain accurate records using a computer.
- Organize and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines.
- Must currently possess at least four ASE certifications and obtain within six months the status of ASE Master Automobile Technician including all eight ASE A‑Series certifications.
- A1 – Engine repair
- A2 – Automatic transmission/transaxle
- A3 – Manual drivetrain and axles
- A4 – Suspension and steering
- A5 – Brakes
- A6 – Electrical/electronic systems
- A7 – Heating and air conditioning
- A8 – Engine performance
- Demonstrated experience guiding and suggesting work methods, materials, and practices to others to improve efficiency and fleet maintenance.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computerized diagnostic tools and repair software systems.
- Demonstrated welding skills on ferrous and non‑ferrous metals, including ability to fabricate parts.
- Must possess the following ASE certifications:
- ASE Master Automobile A1–A8
- Medium‑Heavy Duty Truck H2, S2 or T2, Diesel Engines
- Medium‑Heavy Duty Truck H4, S4 or T4, Brakes
- Medium‑Heavy Duty Truck H5, S5 or T5, Suspension/Steering
- Demonstrated ability in repairing heavy equipment.
- Demonstrated ability in diagnosing and repairing medium‑heavy truck and tractor hydraulics.
- Experience managing and maintaining an auto parts inventory program.
- Other certifications relevant to the position.
- Other certifications relevant to the position, e.g., additional ASE certifications including Medium‑Heavy Truck 3, 6, and 7.
- Effectively operate all work‑related equipment safely.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Work well independently as well as part of a team.
- Establish and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals, both internal and external to campus, while representing Facilities Services professionally.
- Quickly and safely switch between projects/duties as priorities require.
- Proof of required certifications should be made available upon request.
