Under general supervision of the Bridge Foreman, this position is responsible for operating specialized heavy equipment and tools to maintain, repair, and construct County bridge site features. The position also provides operational support to the Road, Bridge, and Junk Vehicle Department and performs a variety of other duties as assigned. The position reports to the Bridge Foreman and does not supervise other personnel.
EssentialJob Duties and Responsibilities
- This position maintains, repairs, and constructs County bridge site features using a variety of specialized heavy equipment, tools, and manual labor support. The position is also responsible for monitoring safety of project sites and work activities and inspecting and maintaining/repairing bridge sites within a designated area.
- Receives and reviews work assignments based on the nature and urgency of bridge site maintenance needs, available resources, and anticipated timelines. Coordinates with other equipment operators and supervisors to ensure the time, equipment, and personnel necessary to complete bridge maintenance, repair, and construction projects.
- Maintains, repairs, and constructs bridge site features according to project specifications, engineering standards, and County requirements. This involves examination of structures, subgrade, fences, drainages, right-of-way, and other components; determining appropriate methods, tools, and equipment to complete projects; and operating specialized heavy equipment and tools.
- Provides specialized heavy equipment support, including cranes, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, and/or others. Calibrates, operates, and monitors the use of heavy equipment and tools to ensure safety and effectiveness.
- Provides manual labor support in transporting equipment and materials; clearing bridge site features (e.g., bridges, road surfaces, culverts, etc.); digging holes and ditches; trimming and cutting trees and shrubs; pouring concrete; traffic control; and related bridge and site maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
- Monitors project sites and work activities to ensure compliance with safety protocols related to members of the public, project crews, heavy equipment and tools, traffic control, materials, and other considerations. Identifies and resolves minor safety issues or deficiencies and refers major problems to supervisor.
- Conducts bridge site inspections within a designated area/route to identify ongoing maintenance needs, perform minor repairs, clear debris or obstructions, install/modify signs or markers, and related services.
- This position supports the ongoing operations of the Road, Bridge, and Junk Vehicle Department by conducting tool and equipment inspections; participating in inter-unit training, workforce development, and service improvement activities; completing required paperwork; and recommending changes, upgrades, and enhancements to equipment, tools, and procedures.
- Inspects tools and equipment to ensure the safe and effective operation of mechanical and electronic components. Performs daily walk-around to check fluids, lights, tires, and other parts/materials; identifies and completes routine maintenance and repairs; and coordinates with mechanics to diagnose and resolve significant problems.
- Coordinates with other Bridge Equipment Operators, Road Equipment Operators, supervisors, and others to participate in cross-training, rotational assignments, emergency responses, workload management, and other inter-unit activities.
- Compiles, completes, and submits required timecards, activity reports, equipment logs, inspection reports, and other records to provide accurate, complete, and timely information.
- Coordinates with designers, contractors, and manufacturers to evaluate new methods, tools, and technologies associated with bridge site maintenance, repair, and construction. Recommends changes and upgrades that improve equipment performance and longevity, reduce life-cycle maintenance and operating costs, and meet changing County needs.
- This position performs a variety of other duties as assigned by the Road and Bridge Superintendent, Bridge Foreman or Foreman in charge, and other Administrative Staff, including coordinating special projects, attending meetings and training, and performing a variety of other duties in support of Department operations and activities. If the County Commission proclaims a local emergency due to an actual or threatening disaster such as an earthquake, fire, riot, flood, etc.,
County employees may be required to provide services during the emergency and for a subsequent period of assessment and recovery.
- The required knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma plus three (3) years of related experience in heavy equipment operations, road/bridge construction, or related trade/technical field.
