Prosthodontist (Part Time) - School Of Dental Medicine

The Prosthodontist is responsible for providing students with training in diagnosis, treatment planning, sequencing and the actual treatment of assigned patients in the specialty of periodontal disease.

Characteristic job tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Advising students in the related subject field
  • Skills in diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Providing basic clinical training in the related discipline and treatment planning
  • Interviewing patients to learn about their medical histories, complaints, and symptoms
  • Examining patients with X-rays and other equipment to make diagnoses
  • Creating charts of patients' mouths
  • Taking measurements for prostheses like dentures, crowns, and bridges
  • Making wax models of prostheses, and supervising dental technicians and laboratory bench workers in doing so
  • Sending models to lab companies that manufacture prostheses
  • Placing prostheses in patients' mouths, making adjustments to make them fit properly
  • Repairing, rebasing, and relining dentures
  • Administering anesthesia, and prescribing medications like antibiotics
  • Conducting surgery to repair structures of the mouth to enable those who have suffered injuries or diseases to regain functions
  • Employ bonding methods to alter the shape of teeth and close gaps between them, to improve function or appearance
  • Treating ailments that cause pain in the face and jaw
  • Using veneers to hide tooth defects, and bleaching teeth to make them whiter
  • Advising patients about brushing, flossing, and other elements of oral health care
  • Consulting with other practitioners (including dentists, doctors, and specialists) to determine treatment methods
  • Maintaining equipment and ordering supplies
  • Providing consultation services on an as needed basis
  • Teaching general dentistry faculty basic prosthodontic services
  • Possessing excellent communication and patient interpersonal skills to instruct dental students
  • Taking direction and receiving assignments from the assistant dean and other management personnel
  • Being available for work during assigned hours for student instruction and practice development
  • Accepting other duties assigned/needed
  • Achieving quality assurance operational objectives
  • Developing quality assurance programs in accordance with institutional protocols
  • Maintaining and improving product quality
  • Updating job knowledge by studying trends in quality management
  • Enhancing department and organization reputation
  • Serving as course director of the pre-clinical denture courses as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum requirements include knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics such as computer experience, knowledge of patient relations and scheduling, knowledge of ADA coding, compliance with regulations and safety protocols, knowledge of patient and student privacy, proper OSHA and safety guidelines, strong communications skills, computer literacy, excellent organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail, training and certification on the institutional data system, maintaining a work schedule, effective interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work cooperatively and collegially, ability to report to work as scheduled, ability to accept work directives, supervising dental students, and flexibility to accept other duties needed/assigned.

Minimum qualifications include education and experience equivalent to a prosthodontist with a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an ADA accredited college or university and a certificate that demonstrates successful completion of a prosthodontics residency program. The successful candidate must have a minimum of two to four (2-4) years' of experience practicing prosthodontics, with teaching experience a plus. The successful candidate must hold a current dental license from Florida.
