Standardized Patient (Part Time) – College of Medicine
JOB SUMMARY
: A Standardized Patient (SP) is an individual trained to portray a patient with a specific medical condition or health issue accurately and consistently. SPs play the same case each time, represent varied personality types, handle sensitive subject matter, provide constructive feedback using standardized tools, and train/mentor entry‑level SPs. The SP Program allows medical students to practice clinical skills in a controlled environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
- Portray patients in clinical scenarios by learning and memorizing case scripts, including medical histories and responses.
- Recall case details as cued by students during role‑play.
- Accurately portray clinical signs, symptoms, emotions and behaviors in simulated encounters.
- Simulate each scenario consistently and reliably, including patient history, affect, physical findings, responses, and interactions.
- Undergo osteopathic manipulation while wearing a hospital gown as part of simulated patients.
- Remember encounters to assess student performance reliably.
- Complete assessment checklists honestly and consistently, including evaluation of humanist behaviors.
- Be observed or audio/video‑taped for training and assessment purposes.
- Participate in training sessions as required by the Course Director.
- Monitor other SPs for quality assurance and report inconsistencies to faculty.
- Mentor entry‑level SPs when experienced.
- Provide professional and constructive feedback to learners and colleagues.
- Accept instruction and ongoing feedback from facilitators and faculty.
- Maintain confidentiality of case information, student performance data, and work‑related materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned to maintain institutional effectiveness.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
:
- Reliable and punctual.
- Strong memory and recall skills.
- Communicate and interact respectfully with students, faculty, and staff.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Maintain specified character through acting and improvisation.
- Comfortable with repeated physical examination maneuvers on self.
- Comfortable wearing a hospital gown.
- Undergo osteopathic manipulation assessment and techniques as part of the assessment.
- Objectively evaluate student behaviors and provide written or verbal feedback.
- Role‑playing skills, portraying a person other than self.
- Improvisation skills and attention to detail.
- Active listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Accept work directives and incorporate feedback.
- Work cooperatively and collegially with faculty and staff, contributing to an environment of dignity and respect and following EEO guidelines.
- Advise the Course Director of any barriers to participation in examination of specific areas.
- Ability and willingness to report to work on a scheduled or on‑call basis.
- Willingness and flexibility to accept other duties as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
:
- High school degree or equivalent required.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred, especially in health science, psychology, performing arts, or related fields.
- Acting experience helpful but not required.
