Job Overview
This classification performs routine work in the operation of scales and related equipment at a County landfill. The role encompasses weighing and recording the weight of solid waste brought by trucks, preparing records, making payments, preparing bank deposits, estimating cubic yardage in case of scale breakdown, maintaining scales, and providing customer service. Daily reports are prepared and appropriate decisions are made in accordance with policies, rules, procedures, regulations, rates, and hours of operation.

Responsibilities- Weigh vehicles using an electronic scale connected to a computer to determine the weight of solid waste.
- Receive payments or enter charges in the computer; correctly count money, maintain a petty cash fund, and perform accurate mathematical computations.
- Make daily bank deposits and prepare daily and monthly reports.
- Make appropriate decisions regarding applicable policies, rules, procedures, regulations, rates, hours of operations, and customer information computer systems.
- Estimate cubic yardage of waste in case of computer or scale breakdown.
- Perform daily sight inspection and cleaning of the scales.
- Work efficiently and tactfully in a demanding, high‑stress environment to answer and satisfy all customer inquiries and complaints.
- Prepare and communicate information clearly, effectively, and tactfully in oral and written communication; establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other County departments, other agencies, and the public.
- Provide support and informal training in Scalehouse operations to other team members when requested.
- Order and process daily operating needs for the Scalehouse.
- Report and travel to various work locations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including participation in emergency or disaster response activities when required.
The work environment may include exposure to high noise levels. The position requires the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds independently and up to 50 pounds with assistance. The role involves sitting for extended periods while working on a computer.
Minimum Qualifications- High school graduate or recognized equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years clerical customer‑service oriented experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years cashiering experience.
- Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to learn landfill fees in relation to materials brought to the landfill.
- Ability to operate an electronic weighting scale and computer console.
- Ability to make routine arithmetical computations and tabulations accurately and to prepare routine reports.
- Ability to sit or stand at a workstation utilizing a personal computer and maintaining concentration for sporadic periods of time.
- Skill in computer operations, including pertinent software applications and a specialized customer‑service system.
