Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the company's heavy equipment, using the machinery for its designed purpose with knowledge of unit capabilities and the skill to operate to maximum potential, recognizing when operation is compromised by obstacles or utilities.
  • Perform daily checks of fluid levels and grease equipment as required.
  • Inspect equipment fuel system, lubricants, tires, tracks, rollers, hydraulics for wear or leaks and report problems to the Foreman or Shop Superintendent.
  • Monitor fuel levels and notify the Fueler or Foreman to refuel to avoid downtime.
  • Monitor service dates and notify the Foreman or Shop Superintendent of any due dates.
  • Pay attention to the sound of the equipment and report any unusual noises.
  • Operate equipment safely and remain alert for unsafe conditions on the jobsite.
  • Be especially careful when backing to ensure the pathway is clear of pedestrians or vehicles.
  • Ensure backup alarms are in good working order.
  • Never carry passengers on operating equipment and never wear headphones or earbuds or use a cellphone while operating.
  • When operating tracks, keep tracks clean and free of dirt and debris.
  • Keep equipment clean and perform cleaning when idle while waiting for crew activities.
  • Assist the crew during downtime with laborer tasks.
  • Park equipment overnight in neat, safe locations accessible to the Fueler and install windshield protection devices and locking devices.
  • Observe fuel fill points for signs of dirt or debris that could indicate tampering by vandals.
  • When operating equipment with steel cables, check cables for wear or frayed areas and report any issues to maintenance personnel.
  • Minimize unnecessary shutoffs of equipment.
