General Purpose Of The Position

The purpose of this position is to perform mechanical and maintenance duties in support of the water treatment plant and all related facilities, including dams, reservoirs, elevated storage tanks, and pumping stations. Successful performance provides safe drinking water for city residents and visitors. The work consists of related mechanical and maintenance duties. Changing weather conditions contributes to the complexity of the position.

• Lead and oversee the daily work of mechanical and electrical maintenance staff, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and direct corrective maintenance and repairs on a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and process equipment at water treatment plants and associated facilities.
• Plan, schedule, and perform preventive and predictive maintenance on pumps, motors, engines, electrical systems, and related infrastructure.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair water treatment equipment to ensure reliable plant operation and compliance with operational requirements.
• Coordinate installation, testing, and commissioning of new or upgraded equipment; provide instruction and demonstrations to staff as needed.
• Supervise and participate in the safe unloading, handling, and storage of bulk chemicals used in water treatment processes.
• Diagnose operational deficiencies and determine necessary adjustments, repairs, or component replacements to minimize downtime.
• Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and parts suppliers to obtain materials, services, and technical support.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, and asset condition in support of asset management and preventive maintenance programs.
• Support long-term maintenance planning and continuous improvement initiatives for plant reliability and efficiency.
• Maintain accurate inventory records, including stock inspections, condition updates, adjustments, and movements, to support inventory control and replenishment programs.
• Respond to emergency situations, system failures, and natural disasters; work extended hours or on‑call shifts as required to troubleshoot and restore operations.
• Lead, plan, and review work involving the maintenance, repair, installation, and construction of water production and distribution systems and associated appurtenances.
• Supervise and operate, as required, a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment, including backhoes, cranes, skip loaders, dump trucks, semi‑tractor trailers, water wagons, forklifts, welding trucks, hammers, pumps and compressors.
• Enforce safety policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Extensive knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of mechanical, electrical, and process equipment at water treatment facilities.
• Extensive knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of pumps, motors, engines, electrical systems, and related water treatment and distribution infrastructure.
• Extensive knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing pumping systems, including submersible, suction lift, and vacuum lift pump stations.
• Extensive knowledge of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance practices for water plant equipment and associated facilities.
• Extensive knowledge of the safe operation, care, and preventive maintenance of light, medium, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
• Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards, safety regulations, and required precautions associated with mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined‑space work.
• Knowledge of bulk chemical handling, unloading, storage, and safety procedures used in water treatment operations.
• Considerable knowledge of asset management systems, maintenance management software, and the application of information technology to maintenance operations.
