The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long‑term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. The LPN demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles, competencies, and practices within the full scope of nursing expertise suitable for the resident’s age and population. The LPN performs testing to evaluate resident status, recognizes problems, recommends solutions, and responds effectively in emergent situations.
The LPN ensures the health, comfort, and safety of residents, contributes to assessment, administers medications or treatments as ordered, documents resident interactions and outcomes, and provides technical support to health‑care professionals. The LPN works effectively with interdisciplinary care teams, communicates clearly, maintains confidentiality, counsels residents, families, or advocates, and develops self‑care programs for residents. Other related duties are performed as assigned.
Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program and hold a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with the State Nursing Board. An associate degree in practical nursing is preferred. If the position requires IV therapy/management skills, a North Dakota graduate must have completed an IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing or hold a Board‑approved AASPN degree with IV therapy in the curriculum.
Candidates must have at least 400 hours of LPN experience or have completed a supervised clinical experience across the lifespan as part of their nursing program. The candidate must hold an unencumbered LPN license and/or possess multi‑state licensure privileges, maintain required competencies and certifications, and complete annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training as required by the department and facility.
