The City of Brainerd's Parks and Recreation Division works year-round to offer various programs and activities as well as keeping the city's parks in great shape for the residents of Brainerd and the surrounding communities.
Essential Functions:- Officiating Games:
Umpires are responsible for officiating softball games, ensuring that all plays are conducted according to the rules and regulations of the sport. - Enforcing Rules/ Making Calls:
They must have a thorough understanding of the rules of softball and be able to enforce them fairly and consistently throughout the game. Umpires must make decisions on plays, including balls and strikes, fair and foul balls, and base running infractions. - Maintaining Control:
Umpires are responsible for maintaining control of the game, including managing player behavior, addressing disputes, and ensuring the safety of all participants. - Professionalism:
Umpires are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, including dressing appropriately for games and treating all participants with respect. - Availability:
Umpires must be available on Monday - Thursday evenings and some weekends.
- Must already be or willing to be USA Softball certified (The City of Brainerd pays the umpire sanctioning fee).
- Usually works one to four evenings per week – Monday through Thursday.
- May also be used for a couple of weekend adult softball tournaments.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience umpiring adult softball is preferred but not required.
- An understanding of softball rules is preferred. Training will be provided for those new to umpiring.
Pay is $32 per game with an average of 2 - 4 games per night. All positions are considered non-benefit earning positions since they are temporary in nature.
All applicants selected will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check prior to employment.
Positions are open until filled with first review beginning on April 10, 2026.
* Pursuant to MN Statute, seasonal assignments are limited to 67 working days per calendar year or 100 working days per calendar year if the employees are under the age of 22, are full-time students enrolled in a nonprofit or public educational institution prior to being hired by the employer, and have indicated, either in an application for employment or by being enrolled at an educational institution for the next academic year or term, an intention to continue as students during or after their temporary employment.
