French Teacher & Department Chair (Middle School)

Thayer Academy is seeking a full-time 5th-8th grade French teacher to teach students who were in a French Immersion program and students who are taking French for the first time. This is a full-time, salaried position, reporting to the Middle School Director.

If applicable, the person would also serve as department chair, responsible for leading the department members of World Languages in delivering an engaging and meaningful educational experience across grades 5-8. The Department Head role has three core areas: curricular/instructional oversight, faculty support/professional growth, and departmental logistics.

What You’ll Do
  • Teach 5 French classes to Middle School students
  • Serve as an advisor for the 7th grade
  • Lead the World Languages Department as Department Chair (if applicable)
  • Apply practices in the classroom and other settings that foster equity, inclusion, and belonging among the Thayer Academy community
  • Engage in ongoing professional development
  • Participate in ongoing curricular review, documentation, and horizontal/vertical alignment as led by the MS Associate Director for Academics
  • Train new department members (when applicable) regarding the Academy’s standards, policies, and procedures
  • Assist in observing and evaluating department members with the MS Director, MS Associate Director for Academics and Assistant Head of School for Academics
  • Encourage/recommend professional growth opportunities and support the inquiry goals process for each member of the department

What We’re Looking For
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s (or higher) in Education, French, or a related field preferred
  • 5-7 years of Middle School teaching experience preferred
  • Passion for working with middle schoolers and a desire to build relationships
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the classroom, curriculum, and relationships with members of the school community
  • High level of comfort and experience with technology in an educational setting
  • Willingness to work on a team in a collaborative department
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively with students and families
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Design Thinking or project-based learning curriculum development
  • Experience with Responsive Classrooms or other SEL curriculum and training
  • Willingness to incorporate metacognition into lessons
Compensation
  • Salary range: $74,345 - $90,000
