Position Conditions: This is a full-time, permanent position of 40 hours per week. This position will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69. First consideration will be given to current City of Brandon CUPE employees. The City of Brandon reserves the right to underfill this position.

The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.

Rate of Pay: $27.33 - $29.90 per hour (2026 Rates)

This competition will include testing and an interview.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To participate as part of a working team that operates a variety of equipment and machinery and performs the tasks required for the safe and efficient operations of the City’s Streets Section.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as street sweeper, sidewalk plow/broom/blower, sander, crack sealer machine, asphalt router, smaller front-end loader, flusher truck, patching unit, asphalt reclaimer, tandem and smaller truck plows, line painting machine, asphalt pre-mix heater and other equipment of similar type;
  • May be required to operate a variety of equipment;
  • Performs repair work with the cement and asphalt crew’s; such work may include providing guidance and direction in a three to four-person crew;
  • Installs and operates special attachments for the equipment;
  • Assists in loading and unloading of equipment or drives equipment to the work site;
  • Performs equipment servicing tasks such as cleaning, lubricating and refuelling equipment, makes minor adjustments or repairs or requests repairs as required;
  • Performs work from site drawings and observes reference stakes, hand signals, oral and written directions;
  • Performs manual tasks as required or assigned;
  • Requests repairs as required;
  • Ensures equipment is securely placed;
  • Performs all duties using safe work practices and ensuring work conditions as required by the Workplace Safety and Health Act and City of Brandon safety regulations are met and maintained;
  • Maintains records required in the Streets operations; such records may include those required for materials, equipment hours, mileage, etc.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Grade 12, G.E.D., C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid and subsisting Class 3 with Air Endorsement Province of Manitoba driver’s license;
  • Must possess sufficient experience operating Equipment Operator II classification equipment (loader and tandem axle truck) to have demonstrated skill in its safe and effective operation, minimum 2 year’s of experience.
  • Must provide a current driver’s abstract
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Experience on cement, asphalt, and snow removal is an asset.

The Equipment Operator II works independently and in a team environment.

  • Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (daily)
  • Self-motivated and quality driven to perform independent projects and facilitate team goals (daily)
  • Necessary to work in all types of weather conditions (daily)
  • Works in areas of confined space, heights, unpleasant noise levels, dusty environments, large insect areas, and adverse odours (daily);
  • Must be available to work varying shifts and overtime and call outs (frequently or seasonally).
