This position is expected to function independently or with minimal supervision in all laboratory areas and duties including but not limited to, performing phlebotomy, specimen processing, and clerical duties, all of which are to be performed in a timely and efficient manner. Display competence in performing all the job expectations described within this job description. It is expected that all Lab Assistant II be proficient in all areas of Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing and Clerical duties and be able to assist with the laboratory operation should a temporary absence of supervision occur.
Responsibilities include front office functions such as patient registration, start up duties prior to opening lab, handling of drug screens collections, quotes lab prices, making deposits, printing labels for requisitions and specimens, properly obtaining ABN forms for Medicare patients, obtaining orders from Intergy or patients, obtaining and using valid diagnosis codes, proper identification of patients, collecting monies from patients and issuing receipts, challenges ambiguous orders and handles according to protocol, taking verbal orders, verifying patient insurance information, providing services for patients and doctors' offices such as lab results, directing incoming faxes to correct personnel, answering phone and assisting callers, properly transferring calls, properly calling or faxing any panic or stat results to appropriate provider per written protocol, performing tasks with minimal errors, understanding and having the know how to perform assigned tasks, ability to master and understand new work routines in this area, degree and willingness to put forth in performing these tasks, phlebotomy, properly identifying patient at draw point, verifying orders and requisitions match, checking all tests, performing peripheral IV insertion, communication with immediate supervisors on any issues that may impact patient care, using proper phlebotomy technique, ensuring ABN is properly filled out and signed, using personal protective equipment when performing venipuncture, properly preparing specimen for transport, labeling specimens properly, supplying proper information on requisitions pertaining to draw such as date, time, initials, number and type of tube drawn, properly interpreting orders, able to draw 6 patients an hour (35 to 40 patients per day), rarely needs a butterfly to draw patients, keeping requisitions filed in folder and assisting with preparing the folders for scanning, preparing reports for distribution, loading any specimens passed through, supplying missing billing information such diagnosis to remote labs, working internal billing charges, no more than 3 days behind, keeping daily requisitions filed correctly and neatly, working outstanding tests report for Lab Corp and Quest, working error logs for Lab Corp and Quest, retrieving results and transmitting requisitions when needed, directing incoming mail to correct personnel, performing mail-outs daily, obtaining correct addresses for outside providers, processing specimens, properly spin down specimens when needed, checking for fibrinogen and clots, pouring off any specimens needed for special transport tubes, preparing specimens for transportation with couriers, distributing and handling STATs according to protocol, performing "Clean-outs" in Flex-e Suite, keeping accurate inventory of supplies, checking and monitoring supply levels weekly, not running out, ordering supplies on a scheduled routine basis such as monthly, distributing supplies to remote labs such as in-house tubes, distributing supplies to patients with instructions, keeping supply area neat and clutter free, computer utilization, knowing how to look up results and print in Intergy, Flex-e Suite, LCM, knowing how to print patient demographic sheets and insurance cards, able to register a new patient in Intergy or make changes to existing information, properly loading drug studies, knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems, specimen processing, billing, reference testing and scheduling, maintaining reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, maintaining compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures, performing all other duties as assigned.
