School Social Worker

Hillsborough County Public Schools – Brandon Schmidt Elementary – Brandon, Florida. This position is listed in the Florida Department of Education and is open to qualified candidates.

Summary

School Social Workers strengthen the district’s mission by providing services that enhance home, school, and community partnerships. They address barriers that interfere with student performance and achievement by bringing stakeholders together and creating an environment conducive to effective problem solving and learning. School Social Workers help students and families with learning, behavior, and/or attendance concerns, working independently under the supervision of site principals and the Supervisor of School Social Work Services.

Responsibilities
  • Promote mental health and well‑being of all students by providing individual and group psycho educational counseling, implementing district crisis protocols, and linking students and families to community mental health services.
  • Serve as the liaison between school, family, and community agencies, including advocacy on behalf of students.
  • Promote parental engagement in the educational process through a multi‑tiered system of supports, including home visits.
  • Consult with classroom teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to provide insight and understanding regarding a student’s needs or behaviors.
  • Develop comprehensive diagnostic assessments of students’ social, emotional, and interpersonal relationships within the school, home, and community.
  • Serve on intra/interdisciplinary teams at each school to assist students experiencing attendance, academic, social, emotional, and/or health problems.
  • Identify barriers to student attendance and engage parents in implementing interventions to maximize student achievement.
  • Coordinate services with internal and external resource providers to develop a comprehensive service and delivery system.
  • Provide and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Experience:

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in social work preferred. Field work placement in a school setting or related human service area (e.g., community mental health, social service agency) or school social work experience preferred.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
Florida Professional Educator Certificate or Florida Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Certification as a school social worker may be earned in accordance with School Board Policy.

Language

Skills:

Reads and interprets general business and professional journals, technical procedures, or regulations; writes reports, correspondence, and manuals; effectively presents and responds to questions from managers and the public.

Mathematical

Skills:

Works with math concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Applies concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:
Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions. Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deals with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer

Skills:

Knowledge of relevant and current computer software programs.

Physical Demands:
Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, kneeling, keyboarding, talking, hearing, depth perception, near acuity, far acuity, stooping, field of vision; lifting up to 10 pounds; reaching with both dominant and non‑dominant hand; overhead.

Environmental conditions:

moderate noise intensity (3).

Other Requirements:
This position requires traveling to various school sites, work locations, and/or community organizations throughout the district.
