About the AgencyThe Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS) is a state agency dedicated to helping Mississippians with disabilities to live and work independently. MDRS serves through four major programs:
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind (VRB), Office of Special Disability Programs (OSDP), and Disability Determination Services (DDS). Services also include support through Assistive Technology, the Office of Business Development and much more. It is the mission of MDRS to provide appropriate and comprehensive services in a timely and effective manner. Responsibilities include:
- Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services statewide.
- Provide guidance, technical assistance, and support to counselors, managers, and other field staff serving individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Promote consistent implementation of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services across all regions and districts.
- Assist staff in identifying and addressing barriers that may affect communication access, service delivery, training, or employment.
- Collaborate with regional and district staff to identify service gaps and develop strategies to improve services and outcomes.
- Provide consultation regarding appropriate services, accommodations, assistive technology, and other resources available to individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Elevate significant programmatic or service delivery concerns to appropriate OVR leadership.
- Serve as a statewide liaison for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, regional and district staff, and State Office personnel.
- Assist with resolving communication and service coordination concerns involving Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients.
- Promote effective communication between clients and OVR staff throughout the rehabilitation process.
- Provide information and resources to staff to support culturally responsive and accessible services.
- Assist with coordination among VR counselors, interpreting services, community providers, employers, and other partners when needed.
- Develop and provide training and technical assistance to OVR staff regarding effective service delivery to individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Provide guidance regarding communication access, accommodations, assistive technology, and available Deaf and Hard of Hearing resources.
- Identify staff training needs based on program data, field feedback, and identified service concerns.
- Maintain awareness of emerging practices and resources related to employment and vocational rehabilitation services for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Participate in relevant state and national training and technical assistance opportunities.
- Develop and maintain relationships with organizations, service providers, educational institutions, employers, and community partners serving individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Participate in meetings, work groups, conferences, and outreach activities related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
- Collaborate with the Coordinator for Interpreting Services to support effective communication access and coordination of interpreting resources.
- Support outreach efforts to increase awareness of OVR services within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
- Assist with initiatives designed to improve education, training, employment, and community partnerships for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Review Deaf and Hard of Hearing program data to identify trends, service gaps, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
- Track referrals, service activity, client outcomes, and other established program measures.
- Assist with monitoring the consistency and effectiveness of services provided throughout the state.
- Prepare routine reports regarding Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for OVR leadership.
- Assist with annual and quarterly program reporting and other required documentation.
- Make recommendations for program improvement based on data, staff feedback, and client service needs.
- Assist with implementation of policies and procedures related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
- Provide input regarding needed policy, procedural, or programmatic changes.
- Support implementation of statewide initiatives and corrective actions related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
