Position Type: Part-time (32 hours/week), flexible hours, with potential to grow into a full-time role
Position Summary:
The Books for Kids Co‑Coordinator ensures that Read to Grow’s Books for Kids program runs smoothly and reaches families across Connecticut by connecting children with books that inspire a love of reading. Working as one half of a two-person team, this role fulfills book requests, manages a constantly changing inventory, supports volunteers, and prioritizes daily program needs.
This is a hands‑on, people-centered role for someone who loves books and has a strong foundation in literacy development, along with working knowledge of children’s and young adult literature. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, and excited about choosing the right book for the right child. As Read to Grow continues to grow and evolve, we are looking for someone eager to help shape what comes next while keeping the joy and power of books at the center of the work.
Key Responsibilities:Books for Kids Operations
- Fulfill and track book requests from community organizations, and families.
- Use literacy knowledge to help ensure books are well matched to age, reading level, language, and program needs.
- Enter, monitor, and maintain accurate inventory records in a program with frequently changing inventory and demand.
- Manage book intake, storage, and distribution in the warehouse.
- Meet weekly with the Program Director to share updates on inventory, priorities, and program needs.
- Schedule, train, and supervise Books for Kids warehouse volunteers.
- Work alongside volunteers to sort and organize books by reading level, age range, and program use.
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, safe, and supportive volunteer environment.
- Build new partnerships and maintain strong relationships with existing community partners.
- Communicate regularly with partners to understand community needs and coordinate book distributions.
- Represent Read to Grow at workshops, tabling events, and community events across Connecticut.
- Coordinate two Books to Go events per fiscal year.
- Support planning and coordination of biannual Family Day events.
- Assist with book drives organized by community partners.
- Work closely with the other Books for Kids Co‑Coordinator to share responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and ensure coverage.
- Support cross-program collaboration that advances Read to Grow’s mission and commitment to literacy access.
- Take on additional tasks as needed to support the team and organization.
- Experience in early childhood education, literacy, or a related field preferred
- Experience working directly with families strongly preferred
- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and literacy development, which may include experience selecting, organizing, or recommending books for children
- Ability to safely lift and move boxes weighing up to 50 pounds
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Comfortable using technology for tracking, communication, and coordination
- Able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, hands‑on environment
- Comfortable engaging with families, volunteers, and community partners from diverse backgrounds
- Flexible, collaborative, and growth-oriented, with a willingness to adapt during a time of organizational change
