School Nurse

The School Nurse provides comprehensive health services to meet the needs of the student population and enhance the educational process by removing health-related barriers to learning. Through planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating preventive and responsive health practices, the School Nurse promotes the health and wellness of the entire school community.

Education & Experience:

Current Connecticut Registered Nurse (RN) license, or multi-state license per the Nurse Licensure Compact. Current CPR/AED certification required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution. Minimum of one (1) year of RN experience; school nursing experience preferred. Experience working with school-aged children preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficient computer skills including word processing, email, and electronic health record data entry. Strong verbal, written, and nonverbal communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policies. Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, administrators, teachers, and community health agencies. Ability to maintain emotional control and professional judgment in high-stress or emergency situations. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push, pull, and twist. The position may require heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), positioning students with physical disabilities, assisting non-ambulatory students, and implementing physical restraint in accordance with district policy.

The employee will utilize standard medical clinic equipment including an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), adaptive equipment for students with special needs, and standard office equipment. There is potential exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. The employee must be able to maintain emotional control under stress and during emergency situations.
