Probation and Parole Officer

The State of Vermont is seeking a conscientious, self-motivated, and highly professional individual to join the Brattleboro Probation & Parole Office as a Probation & Parole Officer.

Probation & Parole Officers play an important role in promoting public safety, supporting positive behavioral change, and holding individuals under supervision accountable to the conditions of their supervision. This position requires sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to make informed decisions in a fast-paced and often unpredictable environment.

Successful candidates should have an understanding of victim awareness, risk and needs assessment, evidence-based intervention strategies, case planning, and effective supervision practices. The ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with local law‑enforcement agencies, treatment providers, courts, and other community partners is essential.

The position is based in an office setting and includes regular field work within the community. Officers may be required to conduct home visits, meet with individuals under supervision, ensure appropriate supervision of individuals under community supervision during hospitalization. Collaborate with community partners and respond to situations outside the traditional office environment.

The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening, weekend, and after‑hours work may be required based on operational needs.

Selected candidates must successfully complete six weeks of required training at the Vermont Correctional Academy. Additional ongoing training and professional development are expected throughout the officer's career.

Work is performed in a field office, correctional and community setting and includes frequent interaction with potentially dangerous correctional clients. High stress may be present, as is some danger of assault. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty required to provide necessary services and supervision. Field travel is necessary and incumbents may be required to provide private means of transportation. Work related court, community meeting, and Parole Board appearances may be anticipated.

Bachelor's degree, or higher, in criminal justice, or a closely related field. OR High school diploma or equivalent or higher AND three (3) years or more experience in human services casework OR related fields, such as mental health/addiction counseling, residential treatment, juvenile justice, direct service legal work, emergency services, corrections, law enforcement, military service, or similar roles.
