Summary/Objective

The Diesel/Tech Mechanic role encompasses a range of skill levels, from entry-level apprentices to seasoned master mechanics. Our technicians work on a variety of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and fleet equipment, performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and complex repairs.

Role Levels & Responsibilities

C-Level Tech (1-3 Years) - Apprentice / Lube & Tire Technician

Overview:
Entry-level mechanics who are learning the fundamentals of fleet and truck maintenance under close supervision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventative maintenance (A, B, C services) including oil changes, filter replacements, and chassis lubrication.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace air brakes, brake shoes, drums, slack adjusters, wheel seals, and bearings.
  • Use OBD-II or heavy-duty scan tools to pull basic fault codes.
  • Inspect tires, check tire pressure, and identify basic suspension issues (worn leaf springs, shocks, leaking airbags).
  • Test and replace coolant, transmission fluid, and differential fluid.
  • Follow strict shop safety protocols: proper lifting, jack-stand placement, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Perform daily tasks including brake shoe and drum replacements, basic lighting/wiring repairs, tire changes, and mud flap replacements.
  • Earn basic air brake certifications and Federal DOT inspection certifications.
  • Develop attention to detail, performing work correctly the first time to meet dealership-level standards
  • B-Level Tech (4-7 Years) - Mid-Level / Journeyman Mechanic

    Overview:
    Mechanics at this stage work independently, troubleshooting, replacing components, and mastering electrical and emissions systems.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Perform advanced electrical troubleshooting using wiring schematics and multimeters.
    • Diagnose and repair emissions and aftertreatment systems (DPF, DEF, SCR, EGR).
    • Service HVAC systems: recover, vacuum, recharge AC, diagnose compressors and leaks.
    • Replace clutches, diagnose transmissions (manual & automated), and repair drive lines and differentials.
    • Troubleshoot air systems, replace air compressors, governors, and pneumatic valves.
    • Understand hydraulics: replace PTOs, hydraulic pumps, repack cylinders (if applicable).
    • Proficient in suspension, ABS diagnostics, and air systems.
    • Perform complex daily tasks: rebuild suspensions, replace airbags and landing gear assemblies, repair wiring harnesses, basic welding/fabrication.
    • Handle daytime roadside service or on-call hours independently.
    • Cross-train in trailer mechanics, OEM-specific systems, or transport refrigeration.
    • Optional specialization (B+): welding, fabrication, or other advanced skills.
    A-Level Tech (8-14 Years) - Senior / Master Technician

    Overview:
    Experienced mechanics responsible for complex diagnostics, major rebuilds, and OEM-specific expertise.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Perform engine overhauls, including in-frame and out-of-frame rebuilds.
    • Use manufacturer-specific diagnostic software (Cummins INSITE, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, CAT ET) for advanced troubleshooting.
    • Diagnose multiplexing/CAN bus communication failures and intermittent electrical issues.
    • Perform basic welding and fabrication to repair frames, brackets, or extract broken bolts.
    • Lead major repairs: trailer body collision repair, reefer unit overhauls (if certified).
    • Manage parts inventory, perform internal quality audits, and ensure zero comebacks.
    • Mentor and train junior mechanics, setting high standards for workmanship and safety.
    Veteran Tech / Shop Foreman (15+ Years) - Master Fleet Technician

    Overview:
    Mechanics with extensive experience in modern and legacy systems, focusing on leadership, workflow optimization, and operational efficiency.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Train apprentices and guide journeymen through complex repairs.
    • Manage workflow, estimate repair times, and delegate tasks effectively.
    • Troubleshoot both legacy mechanical and modern computerized systems.
    • Administer warranty claims and ensure compliance with OEM standards.
    • Predictive maintenance to prevent costly breakdowns.
    • Perform quality checks on all shop work and complex diagnostics.
    • Lead by example, fostering a culture of ownership, pride, and excellence.
    • Transition into formal leadership roles (Shop Foreman, Lead Technician, Shift Supervisor).
    Requirements

    Qualifications (All Levels):
    • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school training preferred.
    • Valid CDL (if performing on-road service) may be required.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and desire to learn.
    • Ability to follow safety protocols and work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Commitment to teamwork and mentorship (for senior levels).
