San Diego State University Imperial Valley – Brawley Campus is seeking a skilled and versatile Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to perform advanced maintenance, repair, renovation, and preventive maintenance work across campus facilities. This role supports the safe, efficient operation of university buildings, infrastructure, and mechanical systems through hands‑on work in multiple trades and facility support functions.
Key Responsibilities- Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and renovation work involving mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural, and steam systems.
- Troubleshoot facility issues, respond to service requests, and perform repairs to infrastructure, drainage systems, fencing, roadways, and campus grounds features.
- Coordinate maintenance projects, monitor contractor work, maintain records, and support project planning and material procurement.
- Provide direction to student assistants and support special events, vehicle maintenance coordination, and campus operations.
- Perform scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building automation systems.
- Operate, test, install, and repair equipment while maintaining computerized maintenance records and work logs.
- Monitor system performance and ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and safety standards.
- Assist skilled trades staff with complex maintenance and renovation projects.
- Respond to emergency service calls, urgent repairs, and safety‑related issues to restore facility operations and mitigate risks.
- Maintain tools, equipment, inventory, and a safe work environment while supporting campus maintenance projects, special events, and Facilities Services operations.
- Full‑time (1.0 time‑base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- Non‑exempt under FLSA and eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., may vary by operational needs.

Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey‑level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or an equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic that demonstrates the achievement of journey‑level skills equivalent to those acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.
Key Qualifications- Ability to lift and transport equipment, material and supplies up to 50 pounds without assistance (in excess of 50 pounds with assistance).
- Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems.
- Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations.
- Demonstrated journey‑level experience in one trade and strong skills in mechanical trades to perform duties independently, competently, and safely.
- Experience estimating costs, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work.
- Experience working in an academic setting preferred.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.
Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
Compensation and Benefits CompensationStep placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines.
- Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 7 ($6,031 / month).
- Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the Teamsters Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,355 – $7,801 per month (Step 1‑Step 20).
- Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
