Overview

Science Teacher, Grades 9–12. Position Type:
High School Teaching/Science – General.

Location:

St. Martin Parish Schools District Office.

Key Requirements and Qualifications
  • Certification:
    Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate in Secondary Science (Grades 6–12) per Louisiana Department of Education Bulletin 746.
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Science, Secondary Education, or a related field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science).
  • Experience:

    2+ years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Content Knowledge:
    In‑depth understanding of Louisiana Student Standards for Science, including life science, physical science, earth and space science, and scientific inquiry, and curriculum implementation.
  • Skills:

    Strong written and oral communication; effective classroom management; facilitation of hands‑on, inquiry‑based instruction; use of data‑driven instruction to improve student achievement.
  • Supervises:
    Students, paraprofessionals, teacher helpers, volunteers, student teachers (when assigned).
  • Reports To:

    Principal.
  • Location/Grade Level: 9‑Month Certified Salary Schedule.
Responsibilities
  • Fulfill all duties traditionally expected of those in the teaching profession.
  • Design, plan, and deliver student‑centered instruction aligned with federal and state regulations and district evaluation plans.
  • Assume responsibility for growth in student learning in the assigned area, ensuring continuous, appropriate progress and setting two yearly learning targets.
  • Plan and prepare in advance, providing written evidence of preparation that references standards, units, activities, materials, literacy strategies, and outcome evaluations.
  • Establish learning objectives based on student needs, district curriculum, and developmental knowledge.
  • Utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques to motivate and enable each student to achieve objectives.
  • Create and maintain a classroom environment that promotes student involvement and achievement with minimal restrictions.
  • Enforce rules and expectations for student behavior and implement district curriculum with fidelity.
  • Provide opportunities for student involvement to enhance retention, application, relevance, and higher‑order thinking.
  • Use differentiated instruction and RTI to develop intervention plans for students failing to progress.
  • Plan and provide regular assessment aligned with state standards, offering timely academic feedback.
  • Understand and implement individualized plans for students with behavior, health, or learning needs, ensuring accommodations and modifications.
  • Identify student needs and collaborate with professional staff to assess and address health, behavioral, and learning problems.
  • Provide accommodations and interventions for at‑risk/remedial students and appropriate subgroups.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, caregivers, and colleagues about classroom expectations, progress, conduct, and support strategies. Be available for parent‑teacher conferences.
  • Assist school administration in implementing policies governing student conduct and effective school operation.
  • Monitor student conduct throughout the school building and enforce all conduct policies.
  • Assist in the orderly, expedited, and safe transition of students between locations.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, books, materials, and facilities.
  • Perform administrative duties such as attendance, classroom organization, and timely responses to emails and phone calls from parents, administrators, and staff.
  • Maintain a physical classroom environment organized to promote learning, with accessible supplies and resources.
  • Maintain efficient and timely record‑keeping procedures, including lesson plans, attendance, grades, inventory, schedules, assessment data, and student work.
  • Supply lesson plans, seating charts, class rosters, and other essential information for substitutes during absences.
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment through team teaching, planning, professional learning communities, grade‑level meetings, staff development, and committees.
