Special Education Paraprofessional (Part Time)

Assist the Special Education Teacher in all classroom tasks and support students with special needs, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment. Provide hands‑on care, instructional aid, and administrative support to enable the teacher to focus on instruction.
Responsibilities- Aid the supervising teacher at all times, including lifting students, changing diapers, toilet training, catheterization, tube feeding, and other health procedures.
- Make accommodations or modifications for students under direction of supervising teacher(s) (regular or special).
- Perform all tasks assigned to allow the teacher to teach, such as record keeping (IEP activities), preparation of class work, preparation of displays, assistance in student discipline matters, grading student work, instruction support, and monitoring of students in all school settings.
- Work in the assigned school/class each year. Class assignments may vary year to year or during the school year depending on student needs.
- Follow the teacher’s direction and use common sense in application.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, books, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
- Maintain a neat classroom conducive to learning.
- Shadow and provide support to a specific child/children throughout the school day to achieve academic goals specified in the behavior plan.
- Support all students in inclusion setting, resource, and self‑contained classes. When assigned to an individual child, also provide support to other students as needed.
- Ensure academic and behavioral needs are met; monitor student schedule and IEP to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Focus on instructional activities to ensure the student is engaged and mastering critical skills; support the development of independence; facilitate positive social interactions among all children.
- Assist and escort students to and from each destination, attending to personal hygiene and care needs; monitor behavior and document care provided.
- Work with the Special Education Teacher, Assistive Technology and Related Services, and the Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapists to carry out support services for special education students.
- Deliver instruction and reinforcing activities under supervision of the Special Education Teacher through drill and practice activities, checking work, and maintaining records.
- Ensure a safe and effective work and learning environment by performing activity set‑up, housekeeping, and implementing behavior management programs.
- Assist with rescue and evacuation of special education students in emergencies and provide general first aid as appropriate.
- Perform hallway monitoring during recess, lunch, and pick‑up/drop‑off times.
- Supervise and assist students with field trips and community/work assignments.
- Assist with adaptive PE and related services, including physical lifting, mobility assistance, and transfer assistance.
- Assist teachers with classroom duties such as correcting non‑graded assignments, typing, compiling, reproducing, and maintaining materials and inventory.
- Provide emergency evacuation of special education students from the building during emergencies.
- Assist with general first aid as appropriate.
- Assist with adaptive PE and related services such as physical lifting, mobility assistance, and transfer assistance.
- 27 hours of college credit with a GPA ≥ 2.0, including 3 hours in English Composition, 6 hours in English/Reading, and 6 hours in Math.
- Associate or higher postsecondary degree; or a passing score on the Para Pro Exam.
- Knowledge of standard office and bookkeeping principles; business English, spelling, and arithmetic.
- Proficiency with a 10‑key calculator, word processing, data software, and equipment.
- Keyboard accuracy and reasonable typing speed.
- Ability to meet the public effectively and establish working relationships.
