9-Month Paraprofessional Salary. Evaluation:
Performance evaluation annually.

Location/Grade Level: PK–Grade 12 support role within the St. Martin Parish School District.

Qualifications
  • 27 hours of college credit with a 2.0 GPA and hours must include 3 hours of English Composition, 6 hours of English/Reading, and 6 hours of Math; OR an associate or higher postsecondary degree; OR a passing score on the Para Pro Exam.
  • Skills:

    Knowledge of standard office and bookkeeping principles; thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; ability to use a 10-key calculator and word processing and data software; ability to keyboard accurately; ability to meet the public effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Responsibilities
  • Aid the supervising teacher at all times and in all circumstances, including lifting of students, assisting with health-related procedures as directed.
  • Make accommodations and modifications for students under direction of supervising teacher(s).
  • Perform tasks to support instruction and classroom operations (record keeping for IEP activities, preparation of class work and displays, assisting in discipline matters, grading, and supervision).
  • Work in the assigned school/class each year; assignments may vary by year or by student needs.
  • Follow the teacher’s direction and use common sense in application; take reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Uphold school rules, regulations, and Board Policy; maintain a neat classroom conducive to learning.
  • Shadow and provide support to a specific child/children to achieve academic goals as specified in the behavior plan.
  • Support students in inclusion, resource, and self-contained classes; provide support to other students as needed; monitor schedules and IEPs to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Support development of critical skills, facilitate positive social interactions, and assist with student transfers and personal care needs as assigned.
  • Assist with instructional activities under supervision of the Special Education Teacher and related services staff; reinforce instructional activities; check work and maintain records.
  • Assist with field trips, community/work assignments, and emergency evacuations; provide general first aid as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining safety and order, including behavior management programs and setting limits with students as directed.
  • Assist with toileting, personal hygiene, and mobility supports as directed by supervisors and therapists.
  • Coordinate with the Special Education Teacher, Assistive Technology staff, and Therapists to carry out support services for students with special needs.
Essential Physical Job Functions
  • Prolonged standing/walking; ability to stand or walk for extended periods and move quickly in emergencies; ability to push wheelchairs and assist with mobility as needed.
  • Sitting and transportation duties; ability to sit in vehicles or classrooms and manage movement as required by field trips or transfers.
  • Positional components: bending, stooping, kneeling, and transfers; ability to transition between positions to perform tasks safely.
  • Lifting and carrying: capable of lifting up to 50 lbs with assistance when required; ability to handle equipment and assist with student transfers with proper technique.
  • Pulling/Pushing: capable of physically restraining a student when necessary per safety protocols and district guidelines; sustain force as needed for safety.
  • Climbing stairs: ability to climb two flights of stairs and evacuate as needed.
  • Balance and fine motor skills; maintain balance and grip strength; visual, hearing, reading, verbal, and writing abilities required for daily duties.
  • Cognitive component and stress handling: maintain memory, focus, and safe decision-making; respond calmly to behavioral situations; follow protocols for restraints and safety.
