This position is only open to Colorado state residents. New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year. This position is for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III located in Silverthorne, CO. This position is eligible for a $2000/month housing stipend. Starting base pay is typically $64,428-$67,848/year. With the housing stipend added in, pay is $88,428-$91,848/year.

About the Unit The Heavy Equipment Mechanic III works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 3, Section 2 Maintenance Unit. The Unit exists to maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public.

About the Position This Journey level Equipment Mechanic position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve and assure the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition following the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Diagnoses, services and repairs various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems.

Vehicles and equipment include, but are not limited to, 10-ton tandem snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6X6 and 4X4 trucks, Snow blowers and mower tractors with mower decks tow behind and side arm.

• Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, inspects composites and analyzes failures, replaces or repairs failed parts, and properly reassembles units in the following systems: brakes, drive, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension systems, engines, computer controlled sanders and de-icing systems and AVL systems.
• Performs preventive maintenance including:
• routine maintenance checks
• performing inspections and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches
• changing filters and oil
• lubricating vehicles and motor driven equipment.
• tuning gas and diesel engines
• servicing valves, fuel filters and turbo chargers
• pressure checking fuel filters
• adjusting injector heights, fuel racks, governors, etc.
• Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Completes annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet and certify vehicles for 49 CFR 396 DOT compliance.
• Completes preventive maintenance work orders.
• Diagnoses equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of test equipment including scan tools and diagnostic computers
• Visually inspects equipment for defects and/or leaking fluids.
• Test drives vehicles and tests operation of equipment and components.
• Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts such as mounting brackets, special tooling and other small fabrication projects.
• Designs, fabricates parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations by machining, arc welding and oxygen-acteylene cutting and welding; plasma cutter; MIG and TIG.
• Sets up and installs new equipment by means of fabricating or modifying to CDOT specifications for special needs and uses of the Department.
