Position: Controls Service Technician (union)

What you will do

  • Under minimal supervision, conduct preventive maintenance, repair, installation, commissioning and general servicing of building automation systems, including detailed troubleshooting.
  • Mentor control technicians, service technicians and mechanical technicians on building automation activities, completing required project and service documentation.
  • Provide customers with high levels of service to solve building inefficiencies, resolving service‑related items and acting as a trusted advisor to provide solutions at the time of service.
  • Diagnose and repair complex control‑system malfunctions, using extensive knowledge of electronic or digital controls systems and ability to test and write modifications in multiple system‑software languages.
  • Consult with customers through data gathered and site assessments, and provide field proposals for retrofits, upgrades or enhancements to existing equipment.
  • Assist sales by providing technical recommendations for sales leads, manage assigned work to meet professional execution and customer satisfaction.
  • Report problems or changes to management immediately, interface with branch manager, service manager, service project manager or subcontractors to coordinate activities.
  • Provide sketches of field changes and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings, and assist with job layouts and bid proposals.
  • Communicate with customers upon arrival and before leaving the work site, keeping them informed on service provided, outstanding issues and recommending system enhancements, upgrades and replacement.
  • Promote the sale of add‑on work, adhere to all Johnson Controls and customer safety standards, and provide safety leadership and instruction to all control technicians and subcontractors.
  • Train customers in control‑system operations, deliver manuals and documentation for training needs, and provide mentorship for certification of controls and service technicians on complex building automation systems.
  • Compile job documentation such as certificate of completion, customer training form, training certificates and punch lists, and conduct extensive self‑study to improve and maintain technical proficiency in company product lines.
  • Perform other duties related to installing, commissioning and servicing building controls, facilities management systems and energy management systems as assigned.
  • Assist in design and configuration of building control systems as defined by contract documents, create flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bill of material, network layouts and electrical schematics, and develop and test software programs necessary to operate the system per project requirements.
  • Compile and/or complete project as‑built and close‑out documentation, assist in coordination and creation of necessary drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation, select, order and track delivery of materials, and coordinate factory‑mounting processes to meet schedule.
  • Assist in loading and commissioning of system and network‑level controllers, validate complete system functionality and troubleshoot problems with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation.
  • Provide field change information to the project team for creation of as‑built drawings and software, keep management and contractors informed of job progress and issues, and assist in performing site‑specific training for owner/operator on the total building control system.
  • Participate in release meeting with project field team, provide recommendations and solutions to ensure facility runs efficiently, including upselling opportunities, and provide quotes to support recommendations.

  • Minimum of four years commercial controls troubleshooting experience in the HVAC industry (buildings, chiller plants and systems).
  • Vocational school program graduate or associate’s degree in a technical field, or two years’ experience in servicing electronic and/or mechanical systems.
