JOB DESCRIPTION – ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT
OverviewThe Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning plays a critical role in shaping instructional vision, supporting building and district leadership, and ensuring high-quality teaching and high levels of learning for all students. We want a leader who builds trust, communicates clearly, and stays closely connected to the work happening in our schools and in our community.
Instructional Vision & Systems Leadership
- Leads through the development, alignment, and continuous improvement of district wide instructional systems that accelerate student learning and reduce variability between schools and classrooms.
- Serves as a transformational change agent who challenges the status quo, thinks innovatively, and leads adaptive change while honoring what is already working.
- Develops and communicates a clear, compelling vision for high-quality teaching and learning aligned to the district’s strategic plan.
- Ensures coherence among curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning, and accountability structures.
- Is well-grounded in evidence-based instructional practices while remaining visionary about future-ready learning.
- Leads for inclusive access and excellence for all students, including students receiving special education services, multilingual learners, and students impacted by poverty.
- Commits to culturally responsive teaching and ensures equity is embedded in instructional decisions, not treated as an add-on.
- Holds high expectations for student learning and adult practice while providing the support and structures needed to meet those expectations.
- Rejects deficit-based thinking and ensures socio-economic status is never an excuse for underachievement.
- Possesses strong knowledge of effective instruction and instructional frameworks (e.g., CEL 5D+, Marzano, DuFour/PLC, AVID) and the ability to scale these practices district wide.
- Leads the implementation and refinement of standards-based teaching and learning across all grade levels and content areas.
- Ensures instructional consistency while honoring professional judgment and local school context.
- Uses knowledge of highly effective instruction to guide staffing, leadership development, and professional learning priorities.
- Designs and oversees a coherent, job-embedded professional learning system aligned to district priorities and adult learning best practices.
- Strengthens and develops the skills and capacity of principals and instructional leaders to provide regular, actionable feedback to teachers.
- Uses professional learning communities to strengthen instructional practice, analyze student data, and foster collective responsibility for outcomes.
- Analyzes instructional strengths and needs across the district and aligns resources and learning opportunities accordingly.
- Assigns and supports staff in roles that maximize strengths, expertise, and impact on student learning.
- Models integrity, courage, and advocacy for what is best for students, even when decisions are complex or difficult.
- Leads a culture of continuous improvement with a disciplined focus on results.
- Oversees the use of multiple data sources—academic, behavioral, attendance, graduation, and climate—to inform instructional decisions.
- Supports schools in analyzing, disaggregating, and responding to data in ways that improve student outcomes.
- Develops and monitors district wide improvement plans aligned to the strategic plan and board goals.
- Actively engages with the Bremerton community by being present in schools, attending community events, and building authentic relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.
- Works effectively as a member of the district’s executive leadership team, contributing to a unified and coherent leadership approach.
