JOB DESCRIPTION - ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT
Our Community
The City of Bremerton is located on Puget Sound in Western Washington. Against the backdrop of the snow-covered Olympic Mountains, Bremerton is a waterfront community with miles of enticing shoreline and parks. The city has undergone an extensive revitalization over the past several years. The downtown has new hotels, a conference center, a county government facility and beautiful landscaping. It is dotted with small parks, including the award-winning waterfront Fountain Park and newly opened Quincy Square.
There is a wide variety of charming local events:
The Admiral Theatre, First Friday Art Walk, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Bremerton Community Theatre, Farmers' Market, Bremerton Brewfest, Armed Forces Festival and Blackberry Festival. A relaxing one-hour ferry ride to Seattle provides a vast array of shopping, theater and sporting events (or use the fast ferry and get there in half the time)! As a well-recognized anchor for the community, the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard provides a strong Navy influence which is celebrated throughout the community.

Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning
The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning plays a critical role in shaping instructional vision, supporting building and district leadership, and ensuring high-quality teaching and high levels of learning for all students. We want a leader who builds trust, communicates clearly, and stays closely connected to the work happening in our schools and in our community.
Consequently, we seek an Assistant Superintendent who:
Instructional Vision & Systems Leadership
* Leads through the development, alignment, and continuous improvement of district wide instructional systems that accelerate student learning and reduce variability between schools and classrooms.
* Serves as a transformational change agent who challenges the status quo, thinks innovatively, and leads adaptive change while honoring what is already working.
* Develops and communicates a clear, compelling vision for high-quality teaching and learning aligned to the district's strategic plan.
* Ensures coherence among curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning, and accountability structures.
* Is well-grounded in evidence-based instructional practices while remaining visionary about future-ready learning.
Equity, Access & High Expectations
* Leads for inclusive access and excellence for all students, including students receiving special education services, multilingual learners, and students impacted by poverty.
* Commits to culturally responsive teaching and ensures equity is embedded in instructional decisions, not treated as an add-on.
* Holds high expectations for student learning and adult practice while providing the support and structures needed to meet those expectations.
* Rejects deficit-based thinking and ensures socio-economic status is never an excuse for underachievement.
Teaching & Learning Expertise
* Possesses strong knowledge of effective instruction and instructional frameworks (e.g., CEL 5D+, Marzano, DuFour/PLC, AVID) and the ability to scale these practices district wide.
* Leads the implementation and refinement of standards-based teaching and learning across all grade levels and content areas.
* Ensures instructional consistency while honoring professional judgment and local school context.
* Uses knowledge of highly effective instruction to guide staffing, leadership development, and professional learning priorities.
