Position: Special Education Teacher - Applicant Pool (260522001)

This position is 7.5 hours/day with 183 base contract days (180 student days + 3 Professional Development days) and 3 supplemental days.

Upon hire, the teacher will be required to attend up to five days of paid training during the week of August 17th.

The Bremerton School District is dedicated to supporting all students and the SpEd Pool reflects our commitment to serving students of all ability levels.

Positions within the SpEd pool include:
  • Resource Room Teacher: These teachers collaborate with General Education teachers to support students with minimal to moderate support needs. They are responsible for writing and implementing IEPs that may encompass a single service area or multiple service areas throughout a student's day.
  • Integrated Skills Program (ISP) Teacher: These teachers provide support to students with moderate to severe support needs, including those who are non-verbal and may require assistance with basic hygiene routines. They also collaborate with other service providers such as SLPs, OT/PTs, and General Education teachers to write and implement programming that ensures students have the necessary skills to access and participate in the general education setting.
  • Behavior Teacher: Our Behavior program serves students who require significant support in managing their emotions and behaviors. Behavior teachers partner with school counselors, behavior technicians, BCBAs, and outside agencies within the classroom setting to deliver both academic and social-emotional instruction. Behavior teachers also partner with General Education teachers to support students in the generalization of skills across both the general education classroom and the Behavior classroom.

JOB DESCRIPTION - SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The classroom teacher will work collaboratively with other building staff members to develop and motivate each student toward an awareness and understanding of the subject matter and/or skills needed to develop into mature, well rounded, responsible young adults. The teacher will establish positive rapport with students and will encourage them to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed for future success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide an optimum learning environment for all students
  • Participate in, contribute to, and be supportive of group decisions and efforts
  • Collaborate with staff and work in teams to provide instruction to students
  • Employ a systematic instructional process designed to meet the needs of students in the classroom
  • Engage in purposeful, deliberate planning for instruction
  • Follow District and State guidelines for essential learning and instructional strategies
  • Work cooperatively with administration and staff in problem solving and group process activities
  • Model lifelong learning, positive self-esteem, and respect for others
  • Set and maintain high personal, professional, and instructional standards for self and students
  • Adhere to Washington Code of Professional Conduct
  • Perform other related duties as required or requested

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Washington State Special Education Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement - Early Childhood Endorsement Preferred
  • Committed to the concept that all students can learn
  • Committed to continuous progress and developmentally appropriate practices
  • Knowledge of Common Core State Standards, a variety of assessment tools, RTI, and the CEL 5D+ Instructional Framework preferred
  • Sensitive to and skilled in working with a diverse population
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Skilled in relating well to students, parents, staff, and community
  • Genuine desire to work with all students
  • Evidence of successful experience in working with students at appropriate grade level and in subject area
  • Knowledge of child growth and development needs

WORK ENVIRONMENT
