American Ethnic & Gender Studies Adjunct Faculty

As a comprehensive community college, we offer instruction in Basic Studies, which includes awarding a high school diploma, GED preparation, and English to Speakers of Other Languages; academic transfer and workforce education degrees and certificates; and four applied baccalaureate degrees. Additionally, we provide community education throughout our two-county region. Olympic College is continuously recruiting for adjunct faculty to teach courses in American Ethnic & Gender Studies (AEGS) and to join the faculty and staff team in the Social Sciences & Humanities Division.

The position will be part-time faculty, teaching primarily Intro to Asian American as well as other AEGS classes when needed. This position requires in-person instruction with a daytime availability between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:15 PM and evenings as required from 5:00 PM to 7:15 PM.

Responsibilities
  • Teach evening, distance, and in-person classes on the Poulsbo, Shelton, and Bremerton campuses when requested.
  • Provide quality teaching, including related preparation, grading, and record keeping.
  • Provide class syllabi to students enrolled in classes by the first day of classes and to the division office as requested.
  • Identify individual learning needs of students and make appropriate adjustments in learning environments and activities to meet those needs.
  • Punctually communicate with students, faculty, staff and administrators.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and/or required.
Competencies/Skills
  • Deliver instructional course content with excitement and enthusiasm.
  • Use a variety of methods and modes of instruction, including Ethnic Studies and Indigenous Studies pedagogy, to ensure student success.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching students with little or no background, as well as the experienced student desiring to further their career.
  • Utilize a variety of assessment activities to evaluate student learning and achievement.
  • Demonstrate success working with individuals and groups representing a wide range of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds as well as military veterans.
  • Demonstrate ability to remain current in Ethnic and Gender Studies, especially with regard to theories and pedagogy.
  • Support diversity in higher education through application of culturally responsive teaching pedagogies and the use of diverse resources/voice, as well as by contributing through actions.
  • Foster a climate of multi-cultural understanding and appreciation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the Olympic College mission, diversity, and a learning-centered climate.
  • Demonstrate success incorporating accessibility and special needs accommodations via course materials and classroom activities.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in the classroom and with other professionals for effective and positive working relationships.
  • Collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, and students as part of an educational team.
  • Incorporate technology in the delivery of course content and services, including use of the College-approved learning management system.
  • Uphold Olympic College's values and ethics necessary to maintain a positive climate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino/x Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicano/x Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, American Indian Studies, Indigenous Studies, Oceania and Pacific Islander Studies, or directly related area from an accredited college or university.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Must be available to teach during the day.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Indigenous Studies, Gender Studies or related field.
  • College teaching experience.
Terms of Employment

Faculty members must submit official, unopened transcripts to the Human Resources department within 30 days of their employment.

Final salary contract will be determined based on educational qualifications and applicable credits.

This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Placement on the faculty salary schedule will be commensurate with educational background and experience. The salary listed is a range based on per quarter. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and this position is covered by the Association for Higher Education (AHE). Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the department.
